Local Anesthesia for Dental Hygienists
In response to recent Florida statutory changes, Dental Hygienists may now achieve certification to deliver Local Anesthesia. Valencia College has designed a continuing education program that meets the requirements for this certification.
The course is now scheduled for July 2013 and is comprised of the following two parts:

Date: July 1 through 31, 2013 Online
Hygienists must be enrolled in the online didactic course to register for the clinical course. You will also be asked to provide proof of the following:
* Current Florida Dental Hygiene License
* Current AHA Basic Life Support Certification
* In Force Professional Liability Policy
This 30 hour online didactic course, combined with a 30 hour clinical program, prepares the dental hygienist to safely and effectively relieve pain and anxiety in patients utilizing local anesthetics. Patient assessment, pharmacology of local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors, nerve anatomy, and complications of anesthesia are topics that will be discussed in the course.
Students will also review Statute 466.017 in preparation for state certification.

ONLY available to Dental Hygienists who have met the 30 hour didactic requirement.
The author of the text, Demetra Logothetis, will provide instruction in the classroom and the dental hygiene lab together our team of Dental Hygiene faculty. This four day classroom/lab course meets the 30 hour clinical component required by the Florida Board of Dentistry for Local Anesthesia certification for Dental Hygienists.
