FRAMER'S CORNER

At Frame of Mind we see framing as the final step in bringing a piece of art to life. Every artwork has its own story, mood, and personality, and the right frame helps highlight those details without stealing the spotlight. With thoughtful design choices and a good eye for balance, we focus on creating framing designs that feel natural, intentional, and perfectly suited to the art.

Welcome to our monthly space where we bring you a piece that we loved framing and tell you all about how we made this piece stand apart from the rest with custom, meant to be framing!

We love framing local art!

With that in mind, when our client brought this striking and delightfully detailed piece into our shop we knew right away it was a piece by Courtney Blazon, a Missoula, Montana–based artist.

You will see her creations in many places throughout our town. She was the Western Montana Fair artist a few years back, murals around town, beer labels, seed packets, and so much more!

This piece was a commision by our client of him and his wife as well as things that represent them and their life.

Heather was up for the challenge of framing this beautiful piece and knew it deserved a framing treatment that could hold its own without stealing the show.

Blazon’s work is layered with narrative, humor, and symbolism—every corner invites a second (or third) look—so our goal was to create a frame that grounds the composition while letting the storytelling shine.

Starting with the matting Heather chose a combination of colors that naturally gives this piece a bit of breathing room and allows you to really see everything that represents these wonderful clients of ours.

The matting closest to the image is a Lentil mat, the color complimets all the green and yellower tones in the piece and ontop of it lies Etruscan Bronze, this mat is a green/yellow color with a very dark and saturated feel. Together these mats ground the piece and really allow you to focus on the intimate details of the painting.

Heather and our client chose a warm, textured metallic frame to echo the regal undertones and historical references within the artwork. Its subtle patina like finish adds depth and sophistication, complementing the richness of the scene without overpowering it.

To finish this piece off the client chose to go with 99%UV protectant Museum glass. This glass offers a low reflection with extra clarity so every detail can be enjoyed no matter where this piece is displayed.

As with all our framing we focus on preservation, using all archival, acid free materials this piece will last the test of time.

The client was so please with the final result.

This combination not only elevates the artwork aesthetically but also reinforces its narrative weight—balancing whimsy, tradition, and contemporary edge. As a local Missoula artist, Courtney Blazon’s work feels right at home here, and this framing honors both her vision and the craftsmanship that brings it to life on the wall.
