LTAP ON THE GEAUX

41 parishes marked on LTAP's map at PJAL convention

At the Police Jury Association of Louisiana (PJAL) Convention on February 12-14, the Louisiana LTAP team exhibited our services and engaged with parish-level policymakers and engineering professionals.

Based on the number of LTAP booth visitors in two days, 41 of the 64 parishes were represented. The team also facilitated the general membership meeting of the LA Parish Engineers and Supervisors Association (LPESA) that was part of the convention’s Day 1 agenda. 
Basics of a Good Road classes wrapping up in next month

If you are a road maintenance and construction personnel from any of the parishes or towns around Acadiana and North Shore regions, we invite you to sign up for our last two classes of

March 11 in Hammond
March 12 in Lafayette

This course provides basic information on construction and maintenance of locally owned roads, aimed at helping agency personnel to better manage and operate their road networks.
Work Zone with Basic Flagger classes held in Tangipahoa Parish

Our very own LTAP Director Steve Strength and Program Manager Chris Melson were in Amite City in Tangipahoa Parish last week to teach four series of half-day Work Zone Safety with Basic Flagger classes.

This course is offered by LTAP year-round upon the request of a parish, city or municipality.
LTAP CLASSES

Chainsaw Safety, Precision Felling and Maintenance

This course is open to crew members and supervisors who deal with routine chainsaw use as well as tree damage response after storms or hurricanes.

Nationally recognized chainsaw safety instructor, Rip Tompkins of ArborMaster Training, will teach these classes on:

March 19 in Baton Rouge
March 20 in Covington
Roads Scholar #15: Safety for Public Works First Responders

This course is open to all levels of public work employees who may be required to respond in the event of a disaster or emergency.

Justin R. Hill, who is a Hazardous Materials Officer with Baton Rouge Fire Department, will teach these classes on:

April 15 in Lake Charles
April 16 in Baton Rouge
April 28 in West Monroe

Local Public Agency (LPA) Training in New Orleans


If you are using federal and state dollars for your local transportation projects, you are encouraged to sign up for the LPA training scheduled on June 23-25, 2020
at the New Orleans Regional Transportation Management Center (RTMC) located at 10 Veterans Boulevard.
 
The training aims to educate local agency personnel to understand the process and procurement requirements associated with implementing local transportation projects funded with federal and state funds.

Louisiana DOTD Secretary: Deaths, injuries to our workers are caused by distracted drivers

Early this month, Dwayne Pitre, a DOTD employee was struck by a vehicle in a work zone near Carencro. He was seriously injured when a distracted driver swerved to avoid slowing traffic on Interstate 49, hitting Pitre instead.

In an effort to increase worker safety, DOTD recently introduced several safety enhancements that include additional personnel on work crews to monitor traffic, the extension of work zones, and the addition of impact-absorbing trailers that provides warning lights and flashing arrows.
Louisiana hosts CarFit event to help improve safety fit for senior drivers

To help senior drivers find a better "fit" with their cars for comfort and safety, mobility experts from the Louisiana Passenger Safety Task Force (LPSTF), in partnership with the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission (LHSC) and the University Medical Center (UMC), conducted a CarFit check-up in Baton Rouge this month.

CarFit is a national program designed to give a quick, yet comprehensive check on how well mature drivers and their vehicles work together. Interested in holding a CarFit in your area? Email LA CarFit Coordinator Patricia.Clesi@lcmchealth.org
INNOVATION

Innovation of the Month:
Crowdsourcing for Operations

LTAP encourages local public agencies to deploy underutilized yet proven effective transportation innovations through FHWA's   Every Day Counts (EDC) initiative.

This month, we feature one of the innovations under EDC-5, Crowdsourcing for Operations, which aim to help agencies respond to adverse weather conditions by providing traffic advisories and warnings to travelers and controlling the flow of traffic on the highways during inclement weather. 
LMA opens applications for Louisiana Small Town Podcasts

Last year, the Louisiana Municipal Association (LMA) launched the Louisiana Small Town Podcasts, and the results were impressive. Over 900 listeners per episode have tuned in to-date to hear the unique stories of five Louisiana municipalities, and our listenership continues to grow.

This pilot was so successful that LMA is now calling for applications for Round Two, in collaboration with Mayor Matt Seale of Small Town Podcast.

Deadline is on February 28, 2020 at 5:00 PM.
