Mundelein High School Referendum

From Kevin Meyers:

Mundelein High School Community,

The District 120 School Board voted to place a $175 million capital improvements referendum question on the April 4 ballot. This would pay for a renovation and expansion of Mundelein High School, some areas which have not been upgraded since it first opened in 1961.

While the project is expected to cost about $225 million, District 120 currently has $50 million in building funds that must be spent by the summer of 2025.

After revising our Long-term Facilities Plan, we determined that we do not have the right kind of spaces at MHS, creating limitations for academics, activities and athletics, and leading to sub-optimized scheduling and long days/off hours for facility use. Some areas of the building are not equipped for modern high school needs.

Priorities in the plan include expanding athletic facilities, renovating performing arts venues and modernizing food service areas. The project also includes enhanced/expanded Career and Technical Education spaces; expanded Transition Center spaces; larger common areas; consideration of mental health and wellness; and improved building performance.

The school building that now houses more than 2,200 students was originally designed for 1,500 students. Meanwhile, Mundelein continues to grow with a large housing development expected to add thousands of new homes over the next two decades.

A successful referendum would mean a tax increase for property owners inside District 120 boundaries. For the owner of a $300,000 house, the increase would be approximately $690 per year. Those numbers would possibly decrease slightly in future years, if the overall property value in District 120 increases.

We understand this referendum represents a significant financial investment of taxpayers dollars. At the same time, we realize the enormous importance of a great education for our children and the need for our graduates to be prepared to compete for jobs with their peers from high schools from across the state, the country and the world.

Please review detailed information here on our website. Ask us questions and find out as much as you can not only about what we need at Mundelein High School, but about why this project is important to our community.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kevin Myers

Superintendent, School District 120

Message From Fremont Assessor Joe Herchenbach

The Chief County Assessor of Lake County has posted the factors for all townships in Lake County on their website.  Fremont Township’s factor equates to a 9 % increase in assessed property value (with other townships ranging from 6.76% to over 13 percent).

These numbers are based on the sales ratio study of all qualified sales from 2020, 2021 and 2022 with escalating market sales prices the primary cause of this value increase.

The job of my office is to reasonably distribute this increase in value based on sales data by neighborhood.

This does not mean that everyone will see a flat 9% increase in value. Some will be higher, and some will be lower based on sales information by neighborhood.

As you know, our office only determines the assessed value of your property. Tax bills are determined by the taxing bodies and how much they levy.

This is a reminder that when you receive your blue assessment notice in July or August, it is important for you to consider if your valuation is fair, and make sure you are receiving all exemptions you are entitled to.

The General Homestead Exemption will reduce your equalized assessed value by $8,000 beginning in 2023 (payable in 2024) and applies if you own and occupy the property as your primary residence.

The Senior Homestead Exemption is not income based and will reduce your equalized assessed value an additional $8,000 beginning in 2023 (payable in 2024) and applies the year you turn 65.

Message from Mundelein Police Chief, John Monahan

Did you know that every night a car is stolen in the Lake county area? This is a reminder to lock your car doors and do not leave your keys or FOB in your car. We are seeing a huge escalation in people entering unlocked cars in and around our community. Criminals have access to your home if they can access your garage door opener. Please lock your car doors.

Paper Shredding Event Scheduled Saturday, May 13

from 8:30 am to 11:30 am

We have scheduled a document paper shredding event for Saturday, May 13 from 8:30 am til 11:30 am at the Fremont Administration Building. Enter through the highway department at 22376 Erhart Road.

You may bring the equivalent of 3 boxes to shred. Staples and paper clips are fine. The most efficient way is to place your items in a paper grocery bag. No plastic bags. To keep the line moving, you will not be able to exit your car and watch the shredding.

This shredding event is for documents only. Please recycle your coupons, magazines and junk mail with your weekly recycling. They will not be accepted.

Pop your trunk and we will take the items. Do not leave your car.

We will not accept any binders or hanging file folders or electronic items because they catch on fire in the truck. If the truck fills up before 11:30, the event will be over.

We look forward to seeing you and appreciate your patience.
