Construction for the new Food Bank of Western Massachusetts officially kicked off last week. “This is going to be the hub of food security for western Mass. and points beyond,” said Chicopee Mayor John Vieau. The Food Bank is moving its headquarters from Hatfield to the city of Chicopee in an effort to expand after more than one million pounds of food donations had to be turned away due to a lack of storage over the past three and a half years. Grow Food Northampton is being recognized for adjusting their strategies during the pandemic to get fresh farm food to community members experiencing food insecurity through both the creation of the CFDP and the tripling of our SNAP Matching capacity.

Northampton residents, Northampton-based businesses, nonprofits and organizations are welcome to share input about the use of Northampton’s ARPA funds at listening sessions. Efforts have been stepped-up to spread awareness among at least 100,000, 10-year nonprofit employees that an Oct. 31 deadline is looming for them to potentially clear remaining student loan debt from their budgets.

1. The median household income for married same-sex couples: $107,200 in 2019.
2. According to a U.S. Census Bureau analysis of Current Population Survey (CPS) data, 14.7% of same-sex couples have children in their household.
3. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender respondents to the Household Pulse Survey were more likely than non-LGBT respondents to experience economic and mental health hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic.
4. Among all couples married or unmarried, same-sex couples were more likely than opposite-sex couples to have both members employed in 2019. Same-sex couples: 65.1% Opposite-sex couples: 51%.  All stats from US Census Bureau.
