Advocates in Travis County, TX; Platte County, MO; Sonoma, CA; and Pomona, CA, passed measures that collectively will provide up to $133 million annually in sustainable, dedicated revenue to support child and youth services. Creating a Plan for Strategic Funding in Austin, TX

United Way for Greater Austin worked with us to hire the nation's first children’s funding coordinator. That led local leaders and advocates to develop a fiscal map and cost model to support local efforts to secure new funding for programs for kids. A new voter-approved children’s fund based on that data will generate more than $75 million annually for child care, after-school, and summer programs.

Spotlight on Voter-Approved Children’s Funds

Voter-approved children’s funds are a powerful tool for creating dedicated sources of public funding for kids. Nationwide, more than 50 children’s funds exist in urban and rural, conservative and liberal locations alike. Through the years, voters from Escambia County, FL, to New Orleans, LA, to Whatcom, County, WA, and across the country have created children’s funds that collectively generate more than $1.5 billion every year for infants, toddlers, children, and youth.

The path to creating a voter-approved children’s fund can be a long and detailed process; but it’s worth the effort—and we are here to help. Through our ballot measure cohort, we help build local capacity and remove financial barriers for communities seeking to establish a children’s fund. Meanwhile, our voter-approved children’s fund community of practice supports the leaders managing established funds. Finally, our biennial Children’s Funding Institute provides in-person training for communities interested in securing local dedicated funding for kids.
