California Earned Income Tax Credit
We need your help to let working families know about the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC) and Young Child Tax Credit. These credits put thousands of dollars in the pockets of families, helping them move out of poverty and up the economic ladder.

Who qualifies for the CalEITC?
  • Any worker with an income of $30,000 or less.
  • Any worker who files taxes with an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN)or Social Security Number (SSN).
  • Self-employed (form 1099) and cash earners.
Workers with children under age six who qualify for the CalEITC may also file for the Young Child Tax Credit—and receive up to an additional $1,000. The CalEITC and Young Child Tax Credits exist in addition to the federal EITC. The average combined tax refund is $3,000, but families could receive up to $8,053.

Workers can file online for free, or schedule a free appointment for help with filing, at http://www.myfreetaxes.org/. The deadline to file is April 15th, 2021.

Learn more about eligibility at https://www.caleitc4me.org/. This site is also available in Spanish, has FAQS, and weekly and monthly benefits calculators.

Help educate the families your serve about these important tools. CalEITC outreach resources can be found at https://first5association.org/calEITC/
Golden State Stimulus Updates
California will provide the Golden Status Stimulus payment to families and individuals who qualify. This is a one-time $600 or $1,200 payment. Residents may receive this payment if they receive the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC) or file with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).

The Golden State Stimulus aims to support low-income Californians and help those facing hardship due to COVID-19. For most Californians who qualify, nothing needs to be done in order to receive the stimulus payment.

Local Free Tax Preparation Assistance
This year United Way of San Luis Obispo County is offering a COVID-friendly Drop-Off VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. This service is available for free for anyone with a household income less than $57,000. VITA allows filers to have their tax returns prepared and filed by an IRS Certified volunteer at no cost. Spanish translation is available.

How it works:
  1. Taxpayer schedules appointment to drop off tax documents
  2. Documents are delivered to tax preparer
  3. Preparer will call taxpayer if they have questions regarding the return
  4. Taxpayer will be notified when return is complete, and all documents will be returned to taxpayer

Drop-off is by appointment only. Appointments are available at the Oceano Community Center on Wednesdays from 3pm to 5pm and Saturdays from 10am to noon. Click here to learn more and make an appointment, https://www.unitedwayslo.org/taxes
Developmental Milestone Resources for Parents
From birth to 5 years, there are typical milestones children should reach in how they play, learn, speak, act and move. Parents can track their child’s development and act early if they have a concern. The CDC's Milestone Tracker App helps track a child’s developmental progress by looking for important milestones using an interactive, illustrated checklist. Learn more here, https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/actearly/milestones-app.html
Beautiful milestone charts are available for parents to track their child's progress and make notes for consulting with their pediatrician. Download the chart in English or Spanish. More resources can be found at https://helpmegrowca.org/
