Thank you to those who joined us for the recent groundbreaking at Parnell Park, which marked the official start to our much anticipated improvement project. City Council and staff are excited to see these updates take shape in the coming months, which will offer modern, inclusive, and state-of-the-art park amenities to local families at one of Whittier's most beloved gathering spaces.


It's spooky season again and we have everything you need for a freakishly fun time! The City of Whittier is your official boo crew and we invite you to enjoy annual favorites like the Pumpkin Patch Splash on October 4 and the Spooktacular 5K Run & Walk on October 25, plus a double feature Halloween edition of Movies in the Park on October 11.

 

Also this month, the City will participate in the Great California Shake Out earthquake drill on Thursday, October 16 which serves as a coordinated yearly exercise for evaluating emergency plans and preparing critical response procedures. Mark your calendar and participate with your loved ones, coworkers, or fellow students by practicing your DROP, COVER, & HOLD ON at home, in the classroom, or at your place of business to ensure safety and minimize the impact of a major earthquake.

Attend State of the City Address October 7

Residents and business owners are invited to attend the City of Whittier's annual State of the City address, which will be held on Tuesday, October 7 at the DoubleTree Hotel Whittier and hosted by the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce. The event is a great opportunity for community members to network and hear updates regarding residential and commercial projects, infrastructure improvements, and economic development. Registration and breakfast begin at 8:00 a.m. and the program follows at 8:30 a.m.

Register Now: Don't Miss City's Spooktacular 5K October 25

October is here and so is your chance to register for Whittier’s Spooktacular 5K! In partnership with the Whittier Community Foundation, this annual Halloween-themed fun run will take place on Saturday, October 25 at the Whittier Community Center (7630 Washington Ave).


Early packet pick-up is available on Friday, October 24 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Whittier Community Center. Race day begins with the kids' creepy crawly dash at 7:30 a.m., followed by the Spooktacular 5K at 8:00 a.m.

Uptown Farmers Market Every Other Wednesday

The Whittier Uptown Association's new Greenleaf Marketplace is bringing something fresh to Uptown this fall! Don't miss a certified farmers market and more along Greenleaf Ave. on October 1, 15, and 29 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.


The event will offer a variety of local farm-fresh produce, artisanal goods, handmade and crafted items, tasty food, and music for families to enjoy every other Wednesday. Shop local and support small business owners ahead of the holiday season, or enjoy dinner at an Uptown restaurant before heading home for the night. Access Preapproved ADU Plans at City Hall

The City of Whittier is making it easier to build an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) on your property with new preapproved templates available from City Hall. Homeowners can select from four designs including a studio layout, one bedroom and one bathroom, two bedrooms and one bathroom, or two bedrooms and two bathrooms, ranging from 311 sq. ft. up to 800 sq. ft. in size. Depending on your home and neighborhood, plans are available in 3 architectural styles and facades including Craftsman, Spanish, and Traditional. The preapproved plans will save you money and time while making your construction timeline more efficient.

ï»ż Adopt A Shelter Dog Month

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and there’s no better time to welcome a furry friend into your family. All Los Angeles County Animal Care Centers, including the Downey location serving Whittier, are waiving adoption fees for dogs throughout the month of October. Each adoption includes spay or neuter services and microchipping, though license and trust deposits may still apply. As part of this initiative, the “Read to Rover” program also waives adoption fees for anyone who reads a book to one of the shelter dogs. It’s a wonderful way to connect with these animals while supporting literacy and community engagement.

Fall into Fun at ï»żUptown Whittier Pumpkin Patch

Get ready for some fall fun at the 2025 Uptown Whittier Pumpkin Patch, hosted by the Whittier Uptown Association and Uptown Whittier Improvement Association! Stop by 6724 Greenleaf Ave. to pick out pumpkins of all sizes, snap family photos, enjoy kids’ crafts, and get your face painted on select days. The Pumpkin Patch runs Wednesday through Sunday, October 15–19 and October 22–26, plus Wednesday and Thursday, October 29–30. The City of Whittier Poet Laureate serves as a herald for Whittier’s poets and⁠ their work. The Poet Laureate is dedicated to building community through⁠ poetry and encouraging a love of poetry among people of all ages.⁠ The mission of the Poet Laureate is to promote the influence of poetry and⁠ enrich the lives of citizens by sharing and encouraging the gift of poetry.⁠

Requirements include:

  • Admirable and proven level of skill in writing poetry.⁠
  • Promising aptitude to promote awareness and enjoyment of poetry in Whittier.⁠
  • Must be 18 or older.⁠
  • Must have resided within City of Whittier limits for at least 2 years.⁠

Halloween Fest: Whittier Museum Hosts Events for All Ages in October

Celebrate Halloween and support important programming at the Whittier Museum this October! Activities are planned for all ages with dates and times listed below:


Spooky Paint Party: October 3 @ 6:00 p.m. — an art-themed gathering with a Halloween twist! Make your own masterpiece during this paint class and fundraiser led by local artist Art Duran. Museum members pay $35 and non-members pay $30.


Candlelight Concert: October 18 @ 5:00 p.m. — a haunting musical evening featuring the Whittier Regional Symphony and poetry performed by Jose Enrique Medina. Tickets are available for purchase at the museum.


Halloween Street Fest / Haunted Maze / Car Show / Vendor Market: October 25 —

  • Enjoy free trick-or-treating for kids from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (1st floor, no scare actors);
  • visit the Halloween-themed vendor market and car show from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with live music at 5:00 p.m.;

Dive In: Visit Whittier's Floating Pumpkin Patch at Palm Park Pool October 4

Get ready for a ghourd time at our Pumpkin Patch Splash on Saturday, October 4, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Palm Park pool (5703 Palm Ave.). This event features a unique floating pumpkin patch, complete with swimming and outdoor fun for just $5 per person.


The Pumpkin Patch Splash is open to all ages and registration is not required — just arrive early to secure your spot. Proper swim attire is necessary and personal floaties and life jackets should be left at home. Please note that the pool is heated. To help us stay prepared, the City maintains a Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP). DYOB: Halloween Edition October 7

“DYOB” (Decorate Your Own Bag) is back at the Whittier Public Library with a special spooky twist. Bring your new WPL tote bag—or any tote bag—and personalize it in the MakerSpace using fabric markers, patches, embroidery, and more! Share tips, get inspired, and make your bag uniquely yours. Booktoberfest is Back: Beloved Fundraiser Returns to Central Library October 9

Celebrate 11 years of literary love and local flavors at the Whittier Public Library Foundation's Annual Booktoberfest! Athens Services Takes Over as City's Exclusive Waste Hauler Effective November 1

The City of Whittier continues to prepare for its upcoming transition in residential and commercial solid waste services.


Beginning November 1, 2025, Athens Services will become the City's exclusive solid waste hauler and will begin operating in areas currently served by Republic Services. This change is part of the City’s updated franchise agreement which outlines enhanced service and environmental compliance.


As staff continues to coordinate with Athens to streamline the changeover, additional details regarding updated service, how to access customer support, and other important notices will be shared over the coming weeks. Haunted Whittier: Spooky Folklore Reigns at the Whittwood Branch Library October 8

The event will explore local folklore and ghost stories, bringing to life Whittier's eerie past. Local Theatre Group Seeks Youth Performers for Beetlejuice Jr.

Are you an emerging actor or actress ready for a big role? Next Level Theatre, in partnership with the City's Parks, Recreation & Community Services department, will hold auditions for a New Year production of Beetlejuice Jr. on October 14 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Whittier Community Theatre (7630 Washington Ave). Whittier youth ages 8 to 18 are invited to step into the strange and unusual! Prepare 1 minute of a song (acapella or played from a track) for your audition and all roles of the show will be available. The first rehearsal is October 21 at 6:30 p.m. and the show will run January 21 through 24, 2026.


Next Level Theatre group, located in Uptown Whittier, offers classes and provides a unique opportunity for local youth to build confidence, develop performance skills, and be part of a magical on-stage experience. Love to read? Join the Whittier Public Library's book clubs and enjoy a new story each month. Whether you are looking to discover new titles, share your favorite reads, or simply connect with other book lovers, our clubs are the perfect place to dive into great conversations in a welcoming space.


The Teen Book Club meets Tuesday, October 14 at 5:30 p.m. at the Central Library (7344 Washington Ave.) and is free to attend. There are no assigned books; bring a friend to talk about whatever great novel you're in the middle of and enjoy complimentary boba and conversation. Teens will also get the chance to exchange recommendations, discover hidden gems, and meet other readers who share their interests.

On October 15, adults are invited to attend the Wednesday Night Book Group for an engaging discussion of Mirage Factory: Illusion, Imagination, and the Invention of Los Angeles. This month's selection serves up intricate stories, rich period atmosphere, and colorful personalities in a captivating portrayal of the City of Angels.


The Wednesday Night Book Group offers a chance to dive deeper into thought-provoking titles while connecting with fellow readers in a welcoming and relaxed setting. Shake Out: Participate in Statewide Earthquake Drill on October 16

Join the City of Whittier on Thursday, October 16 at 10:16 a.m. for the Great California Shake Out earthquake drill, which encourages residents, schools, organizations, and businesses to participate in a statewide earthquake simulation. The event takes place annually on the third Thursday in October and calls for community members to evaluate their existing emergency preparedness plans and practice their response in the case of an earthquake. Athens Services Hosts Hazardous Waste & E-Waste Collection October 18

Athens Services is partnering with the City of Whittier to host a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and Electronic Waste (E-waste) collection event on Saturday, October 18, from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. This is a valuable opportunity for residents to safely dispose of items labeled toxic, combustible, corrosive, flammable, or irritant—including household cleaners, paints, pesticides, and automotive products—which cannot legally be thrown in regular waste containers, drains, or abandoned.


The event will take place in the Whittier Public Parking Lot located at 12813 Bailey Street (please enter from Milton Ave). Proof of City of Whittier residency and appointments are required; register now to secure your spot and help keep our community clean and safe.

Family Sports Night Out: LA Galaxy October 18

Come cheer on the LA Galaxy vs. Minnesota United FC on Saturday, October 18 for Family Sports Night Out! Registration for $35 per person is open to all ages and includes transportation to and from Main Stadium at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson and a ticket for stadium entry. Transportation will depart from and return to the Whittier Community Center (7630 Washington Ave.). Bus departs at 4:00 p.m. and returns at 10:00 p.m. Raffles, games, and snacks will be provided during the bus ride; purchases made at the stadium are the responsibility of the participant. Baila Baila! Sing & Dance at Broadway Park October 22

The Whittier Public Library invites you to its popular Baila Baila! outdoor event at Broadway Park (12816 Broadway) on Wednesday, October 22 from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. with Isabel Brazon of Baila Baila. Try Woodburning at the Whittwood Branch Library October 22

Ignite your curiosity and learn about the art of pyrography, also known as woodburning, at the Whittwood Branch Library (10537 Santa Gertrudes Ave.) on Wednesday, October 22.


Attendees will design spooky artwork using a heated pen while eerie instrumental music sets the mood for a relaxing crafting session. Those who participate will also walk away with their own haunted keepsake!

Coming Up: Health & Resource Fairs for Seniors

The Whittier Senior Services Division invites local seniors to attend a Medicare Open Enrollment Fair on Thursday, October 16 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Uptown Senior Center (13225 Walnut St.). Residents age 55+ and caregivers will have the opportunity to connect with a variety of local healthcare and service providers and obtain free health screenings. Additional resources will also be available, including information on senior activities, Dial-A-Ride, and more. Congresswoman Linda Sanchez will also host her 20th Annual Senior Fair on Thursday, November 13 at Pico Park (9528 Beverly Blvd.) from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event will offer free health screenings; information on government programs like Social Security, Medicare, veterans benefits, and food assistance; housing resources; and workshops on senior scams to watch for. Republic Services Hosts Community Clean-Up October 25

Republic Services will host a free community clean-up and compost giveaway for City of Whittier residents on Saturday, October 25 between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. at Leffingwell Elementary School (10625 Santa Gertrudes Ave.). Participants are reminded to carefully secure items for drop-off in their trunk or truck bed in boxes that are easy to remove from vehicles. No hazardous waste will be accepted; allowable e-waste includes TVs, computers, monitors, printers, cell phones, etc. Clothing donations and paper for shredding will also be accepted.


Attendees are asked to bring a sturdy container for compost and will be required to show proof of City of Whittier residency to participate. Please call Republic Services at (800) 299-4898 with questions.

Maker Night at the Library: Create Alebrijes (Mexican Folk Art) October 27

Join the Whittier Public Library for Maker Night: Alebrijes at the Central Library MakerSpace (7344 Washington Ave.) on Monday, October 27 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Adults are invited to spend a relaxing evening crafting colorful paper alebrijes in celebration of DĂ­a de los Muertos.

Whittwood Branch Library Hosts Halloween TAB & Soda Fest for Teens October 29

The Whittier Public Library is looking for local teens who want to help plan programs, develop teen-oriented services, and advise on new library materials that YOU want to see! Attend the Teen Advisory Board (TAB) meeting on Wednesday, October 29 at the Whittwood Branch (10537 Santa Gertrudes Ave.) and earn volunteer hours while participating!


The meet-up starts at 5:30 p.m. and you must submit a TAB application before attending your first meeting. Applications are available for all high school students and can be found online or in person at both Library locations.


This meeting will be a special one featuring a K-Pop Demon Hunters twist! Come dressed in your best spooky attire and stay after the meeting for some frightful fun at our annual Teen Soda Fest at 6:00 p.m. Cosplay and Halloween costumes are welcome (Huntrix/Saja Boys fans, we see you!). REEL Spooky: View Halloween Documentary October 30

Whittier Salutes Servicemembers at Veterans Day Ceremony November 11

The City of Whittier invites you to join us in honoring our veteran community with a special Veterans Day recognition on Tuesday, November 11 at Central Park in Uptown Whittier (6532 Friends Ave.). A ceremony and family picnic will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and feature patriotic music and special remarks from the City Council. Register Now for Chalktastic on November 15

Whittier, get ready to unleash your inner artist at Chalktastic! This annual event takes place on Saturday, November 15, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Whittier City Hall (13230 Penn St.). Registration is free so find your inspiration and prepare to turn a 4x4 foot concrete square into your personal canvas!


Artists of all ages are welcome to participate and showcase their unique talents. Prizes will be awarded in each age group, along with an overall People's Choice award. In addition to the competition, enjoy chalk art demonstrations by professional artists, fun games, food vendors, and music. Thanksgiving Sports Camp: Register Online

Looking for a way to keep the kids busy and active over the Thanksgiving break? Register for Whittier's Thanksgiving Sports Camp happening Monday, November 24 through Wednesday, November 26 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Whittier Community Center & Joe Miller Field (7630 Washington Ave.). This half-day program is designed for youth ages 5 to 13 and includes 4 breakout sessions featuring a variety of sports and games, crafts, fun activities, and daily snacks.
