June 24, 2022
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist. John is one of the more fascinating characters in the Bible. He’s the central character at the beginning of both Mark and Luke’s gospels, and by all accounts he was a striking fellow – a long-haired, wild-eyed wilderness preacher who drew crowds by his fiery speeches condemning the sins of the day and pronouncing the coming reign of God. Yet he also steps aside from the stage almost as quickly as he appears. With the arrival of Jesus, John knows that his mission of proclamation has been fulfilled. He takes hold of the power given to him, but he also recognizes that power’s purpose in pointing toward an even greater power. It’s a great model for us in the church as well – we receive power in the Spirit to do great things, but those things point to the one from whom all power comes: Jesus Christ.

I love John the Baptist because he was audacious. He was able to draw big crowds because he was not afraid to stand out, to speak out and to call things out when he saw them. The Collect for today speaks of his example to “constantly speak the truth, boldly rebuke vice, and patiently suffer for the truth’s sake.” How often are we following that example in the church? Do we proclaim the truth of the gospel in both our actions and our words? Are we standing up for the truth, especially on behalf of those whose voices are not being heard? The truth that John suffered patiently for was the good news to those who sat in darkness and the shadow of death – that God is making all things new, and that the principalities and powers of oppression would not have the last word. Let us remember that we are all empowered by the Holy Spirit to shine brightly and to live out the gospel audaciously as John did – but let us also be reminded that this power is not for our own glorification, but instead to point others toward Christ’s message of redemption.

In Christ,
Brian+

Collect for the Nativity of St. John the Baptist
Almighty God, by whose providence your servant John the Baptist was wonderfully born, and sent to prepare the way of your Son our Savior by preaching repentance: Make us so to follow his teaching and holy life, that we may truly repent according to his preaching; and, following his example, constantly speak the truth, boldly rebuke vice, and patiently suffer for the truth's sake; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

We are grateful for the time and space Oceanside Sanctuary has provided during this time of discernment for Holy Cross.

Thank you all for your participation throughout this season of discernment -- it's exciting to see how the Holy Spirit works through us when we work together.
June Outreach
Camp Stevens Camperships

Camp Stevens is your diocesan camp! Camp Stevens' mission is to inspire, challenge, and empower personal, social, and environmental transformation. For 70 years, Camp Stevens has provided a welcoming home for retreats, summer camps, and outdoor education in the mountain town of Julian, CA. Our 256 acres serve as a place of healing, adventure, and most importantly community.

Our June outreach this year will support a vital part of this important diocesan resource: Camp Stevens Campership Fund. Camp Stevens offers a tiered pricing structure that allows families to pay more or less according to their circumstances. Many of the campers need financial assistance to attend. And, this summer, at least 30 refugee campers will attend Camp Stevens - the Camp Stevens goal is to raise $30,000 for the Refugee Campership Fund. Holy Cross has a long partnership with RefugeeNet and supporting the Camp Stevens Campership Fund is one way we can continue that partnership while also supporting our diocesan camp!

Please consider supporting this important diocesan resource: You may do so here (via Faithstreet, be sure to select "General" from the drop down box and note Camp Stevens on the memo line!), drop a check in the Collection Plate on Sunday at church, or by mailing a check to Holy Cross (2647 Gateway Rd Suite 105 #290, Carlsbad, CA 92009) please note on the memo line "Camp Stevens Campership" or send a donation via Zelle to Holy Cross and note "Camp Stevens Campership" on the memo line.

You may also contribute directly to Camp Stevens, here (be sure to select General Campership in the "This Gift is For" drop down box and write Holy Cross's name on the form!).
Congregational Forum Last Sunday

We had a wonderful time at our Congregational Forum last Sunday where we discussed spiritual gifts and how to use our gifts in service of the mission of the church. It was a great opportunity for reflection and fellowship, as we shared our own interests, talents, passions, and interests, and also pointed out the gifts we saw in other members of our community. At the end of the forum, each member filled out a form listing 3 of the gifts that they would be interested in contributing to the mission of Holy Cross. Thank you to all who attended, and we look forward to finding ways to put those gifts into use in our community!

For those who were not able to attend the forum, we would like to give you the opportunity to reflect on and offer your gifts as well. The questions that we discussed were:

>>>1) Where do you volunteer now (church or otherwise)? Where have you >>>>>volunteered in the past? What did you find most fulfilling?
>>>2) What do you like to do in your spare time? What are you really good at?
>>>3) If you could do anything as a ministry (within the church or supported by >>>>>the church), what would it be?
>>>4) What skills/interests/talents do others see in me?

After reflecting on these questions, you can go here to fill out a form listing the 3 gifts, talents, skills, interests, or passions that you would like to offer to contribute to the work of ministry at Holy Cross:

This link will be available in today’s and Friday’s newsletters, so please take some time to reflect on how you might be able to join together with the community in helping Holy Cross in its mission! Don’t be afraid to think “outside the box” – whatever you feel that God is calling you to do, we are here to help make that a reality! “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might.” Ecclesiastes 9:10.

Immigration Ministry Update

For the past six years, Holy Cross’ Immigration Ministry has provided assistance to one of our parishioners, a Nigerian refugee who is seeking asylum in the United States. This assistance has come in the form of legal help, job and housing assistance, and spiritual and emotional support. The ministry has been made possible by the work of many of our members and by the financial donations of our congregation. At this time, our parishioner (whose name is withheld from this newsletter due to safety concerns) is facing additional roadblocks in his legal struggle for asylum, and Holy Cross is once again re-establishing the Immigration Ministry fund to help with his legal fees. Your donations to this fund are greatly appreciated at this time, as well as your prayers. Donations can be made via check made out to Holy Cross with “Immigration Ministry” in the memo line, or via any of our electronic payment platforms. If you have any questions about this ministry, please contact Rev. Brian via phone or email.

Visioning Ministry
Visioning Update
06/17/22

The Visioning Team met Sunday, June 5th, reviewed what remains of our plan to complete the work at hand. Then we spent the remainder of the meeting reviewing the Goals and SMART Objectives subgroups had started work on. In a nutshell, our goals are centered around: financial self-sufficiency, open and constructive communication, spiritual growth and discipleship, and growing our family through outreach and evangelism (especially in South Carlsbad).

We had lively and in depth discussions about the objectives for each goal area and made some very substantial progress. By the end (almost an hour past our scheduled stop time!), we were getting a little brain dead and agreed to have the BC work on crafting action steps for each objective (although we had notes/ideas for several already).

The BC tackled this work at its meeting this past Thursday (June 16th) but still has a bit more to do at another meeting scheduled on June 30th.

After the BC works to craft the action steps, we will have our Goals clearly defined and we will be ready to finalize our Holy Cross Strategic Plan and then the VT will wrap up our almost 10 months of work! As Deacon Brian voiced in his prayers for our meeting's opening, we have been preparing and preparing for "the time" and now we are finding ourselves finally experiencing "the time": finalizing and moving into our new home, publishing this dynamic plan, and starting to gear up for calling a new vicar (which all the work of this team will greatly support). Exciting times!!

In the Diocese and Beyond
Every baptized Christian is called to ministry. What is yours? Education for Ministry (EfM) is a program of the School of Theology at the University of the South (Sewanee) that provides the foundational education to assist you in discerning and carrying out your ministry. Like the mustard seed (Luke 13:18-19), we need fertile soil to grow. EfM is that fertile soil, and we are the mustard seeds. Learning scriptures, church history, and theology is the light shining on the soil, warming it so the seed will sprout.

The EfM program develops an informed and knowledgeable laity through a series of four one-year seminars. A small group seminar is the nucleus of the EfM program (maximum of 12 participants plus one or two mentors). Likened to the original house churches of the first century, our groups conduct all four years concurrently in the same seminar. In year one, participants' academic study focuses on the Hebrew Bible; year two on the New Testament; year three is church history; year four wraps it all together with theology.

EfM is not a program for ordination. It is a series of lay education seminars conducted amongst a small, tight-knit community. continue reading
