"Happy first day of fall!"

Connect With LMS
Lockhart Middle School

Monday is the Autumnal Equinox or the first day of the fall season. And with the first day of fall we have our annual Open House event beginning at 6:00 p.m. (General PTSA meeting at 5:30 p.m.) We are very excited about opening up the campus and classrooms for our school community. Please, if you have a student attending Lockhart this year, make every effort to join us Monday evening to meet all of your child's teachers and to visit their classrooms.

We also have two other special events on the docket this week: Tuesday afternoon's home soccer game vs. College Park and Wednesday morning's "Dads Take Your Child to School Day" (details just below to include all significant males in our students' lives). These are also wonderful community events and I encourage you to participate if you have a student at Lockhart.

Finally, we have announced both our 2019-2020 Teacher of the Year and our 2019-2020 Support Person of the Year (just below). If you happen to see either Ms. Phillips or Ms. Peterson on campus this week, please take a quick moment to congratulate them. These are major career achievements based upon nominations from their peers and we could not be more proud of their recognition. Congratulations to both Ms. Phillips and Ms. Peterson!

Best wishes for the week ahead and I hope to see you Monday evening at our 2019 Open House!

Counselor Corner
Meet Ms. Smith!

My name is Waletta Smith and I am Lockhart's Middle School Counselor for 8th grade and 6th grade alpha K-Z.

My interest in education began at very young age. My mother, a retired Orange County Public Schools Biology teacher, instilled in me the importance of education. I attended the University of Georgia where I received my bachelor's degree. Then, I received my master's degree from Troy State University. I am licensed by the state of Florida as a mental health counselor. I have been employed by Orange County Public Schools for several years and I am proud to work at Lockhart Middle School!

After working at Lockhart Middle School during the day, I enjoy my evening time with my husband and twins. Spending time at our children's sports events and musical activities, traveling with family, and visiting art museums, are just a few of my favorite things to do.

I am happy to have the opportunity to work with our Lockhart Lancers this school year!

~ Waletta Smith, MS

Passport Reading Adventure (Sept. 15 - Oct. 15)
Students have the opportunity to participate in our Passport Reading Adventure during Hispanic Heritage Month that runs from September 15 until October 15. Directions for the reading and travel adventure are below. We look forward to having many Lancers participate!

Book of the Week
A book that our reading Lancers will enjoy is The EPIC FAIL of Arturo Zamora by Pablo Cartaya. Enjoy the review below by Goodreads.

Save the restaurant. Save the town. Get the girl. Make Abuela proud. Can thirteen-year-old Arturo Zamora do it all or is he in for a BIG, EPIC FAIL?

For Arturo, summetime in Miami means playing basketball until dark, sipping mango smoothies, and keeping cool under banyan trees. And maybe a few shifts as junior lunchtime dishwasher at Abuela's restaurant. Maybe. But this summer also includes Carmen, a cute poetry enthusiast who moves into Arturo's apartment complex and turns his stomach into a deep fryer. He almost doesn't notice the smarmy land developer who rolls into town and threatens to change it. Arturo refuses to let his family and community go down without a fight, and as he schemes with Carmen, Arturo discovers the power of poetry and protest through untold family stories and the work of Jose Marti.
This books is available in our media center and is worth 7 AR (Accelerated Reader) points.

Rigor in the Classroom with Mr. Rawlerson
World History with Mr. Rawlerson (Friday, Sept. 20)

Pictured here is Mr. Rawlerson's "Common Board Configuration" or CBC from last Friday. He updates this daily and upon entering the classroom, students know what to expect for the day including a reminder of the 1 to 4 learning scale.

These are some of the critical vocabulary words in World History that the students are learning here in the first quarter of 2019-2020.

The students in Mr. Rawlerson's classroom practice "bell-to-bell" learning - little valuable instructional time is ever wasted. Detailed out here is their assignment from last Friday with reminders of no talking to stay on task.

Monday's Motivational Moment!

THE TRUTH ABOUT SUCCESS

To be successful, you don't need to be lucky or rich. But you do need to know this:
  • You are what you do daily.
  • You first form your habits; then your habits form you.
  • It is just as easy to form habits of success as it is to form habits of failure.
Remember Lancers - Every day you live, you are in the process of becoming. Whether you are becoming better or worse depends on what you give yourself to.

Make it a great week Lancers and I am looking forward to seeing everyone at Open House Monday evening!
