J & L Café Mission: “Give Them the Pickle!” a coined phrase by Bob Farrell.

The J & L had been a true staple in the community for a very long time, getting its roots in 1935 as the Duck In. After that, two men by the names of Jones and Lane purchased the business and J & L Café was born. John did not get a chance to meet those fine businessmen Jones & Lane but when asked would they like to purchase the café it was an immediate yes from John and Suzanne McMahon July 1st, 1998. The McMahon’s became the proud owners, and it has been a ride ever since. John and Suzanne would like to offer a big thank you to Sterling for accepting them. John and Suzanne would also like to offer a special heartfelt thank you to Dan and Karen Rich for the opportunity.

All their children Andrea, Erika, Coby and Trevor have grown up in this fine café. Being a family business has contributed largely to their success.

The J & L Café has become the meeting place of Sterling and a community outreach. They have built a culture of giving back to their beloved community. With the passing of John in 2022, his wife Suzanne, and their children; Andrea, Erika and Coby have continued to contribute to their community in all the ways they always have. They have been blessed to employ 35-40 people for the past 26 years. They are truly the J & L Café Family, and three amazing ladies have worked there the entire time- Judy Sandoval, Erin Schmitz, and Maria Sarmiento. They have been such an asset to the community!

They see the café as a way of life for most of their customers, a place to feed their stomach and souls, see new and old friends, and sort of a mental health place. They would like to keep that feeling for as long as they are here.

J & L Café was remolded 4 years ago during Covid shut down. During that time, they donated over 20,000 free meals. J & L Café received Readers’ Choice 2021, 2022 and 2023 Best Breakfast and Best Place to Eat from the Journal Advocate. The community reciprocated the feeling of love and appreciation that John & Suzanne give to their customers and the community by naming John, Suzanne, and the staff of the J & L the Logan County Chambers’ “Citizens of the Year” for 2020.

J & L Café provides American Style food, and they make sure you do not leave hungry! They have consistently maintained the high standards that their customers have all come to expect and enjoy.

The J & L Café is located at 423 N. 3rd St., Sterling CO 80751. They can be contacted at (970) 522-3625 or find them on Facebook!

Please join the Logan County Chamber of Commerce in congratulating the J & L Café as this weeks Member of the Week and tying our community together!

Logan County Heritage Center

Member of the Week

The Logan County Heritage Center was established in 1975 by the efforts of the Senior Citizens Club wanting to have their own place to share in recreational and social activities. The Heritage Center was originally operated through the Recreation Division of the City of Sterling. In November of 1989 the operations and employees of the Heritage Center became the responsibility of Logan County government. Through the years things have changed and evolved, getting rid of their arts/crafts room with a kiln for pool tables, multiple lunch tables have had to make space for exercise classes.

The building went through a remodel in the late 90’s to accommodate the kitchen into a commercial space to allow for the daily preparation of their senior nutrition program funded by the Area Agency on Aging, The Heritage Center, in addition to all their activities and programs, is home to the Logan County Council on Aging. Logan County Council on Aging supports the operations of the building, offering financial assistance programs to support the hearing and vision needs of adults 60 years of age and older.

Their upcoming event “Embracing Aging on the Square” being hosted at the E.S. French Hall on the NJC campus on Friday, October 11th will offer exciting presentations, vendors and informational booths from CU Anschutz, CSU Center for Healthy Aging, Access Gallery and the Sterling community. Please join them! This event confirms their commitment to being a local advocate for older adults and healthy aging.

The Logan County Heritage Center also partners with the Area Agency on Aging in offering the Meet & Eat nutrition program. They deliver meals for the greater Sterling area and Sedgwick County. They also host lunch Monday-Friday at the Heritage Center, 60 years of age and older can join them for lunch (reservations required) for a suggested DONATION of $6.25.

The Logan County Heritage Center is always trying new activities and programs, if you feel you have something to offer or teach at the Heritage Center please get in touch. If you would like to know more about the Logan County Heritage Center, please stop by at 821 N. Division Ave. or contact them at (970) 522-1237, heritagecenter@kci.net, or find their newsletter at www.logancountyco.gov.
