The accounting firm of Lauer and Unrein, Certified Public Accountants, was established in October 1984 by two college roommates Mike Lauer and Tim Unrein. Their vison and passion were to provide tax, audit and accounting related services to business, individuals and other entities in Northeast Colorado and surrounding areas. The firm’s first office location was at 302 N 3rd Ave.
As the firm continued to grow, in the fall of 1990 a career opportunity became available for Tim Unrein requiring his family to move from Sterling. At the same time Mike Lauer had the opportunity to acquire another accounting firm in Sterling, which resulted in the name change to Lauer & Associates, PC and relocation to Poplar Street.
In July 2002 Scott Szabo became a shareholder in the firm, serving as the audit partner. Under Scott’s leadership the audit related services have experienced significant growth. The firm was renamed Lauer, Szabo & Associates, PC to recognize his leadership.
In 2003 Lauer, Szabo & Associates, PC purchased the vacant lots on the 200 block of Main Street where the 2002 fire destroyed the existing businesses and buildings. The construction of their office building at 205 Main Street was completed in November 2004.
Lauer, Szabo & Associates, PC is a full-service accounting firm providing services in income tax planning, consulting and preparation; governmental and not for profit audit and accounting services; payroll and general accounting services. In addition to Mike and Scott, firm members consist of Brenda Lauer, CPA/MBA; Kristin Jorgensen, CPA; Shayna Etl, CPA and Lisa Egan, administrative assistant. Although the firm name and members of the firm have changed over the years, the vision, passion and commitment to serve their clients with professionalism continues.
