CDPH Announces Updated Recommendation
for Mask Guidance
|
|
Aligns with CDC guidelines for masking indoors while recommendations for outdoor settings remains unchanged
Following updated guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and based on Chicago’s current local COVID-19 data, the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) now recommends that everyone over the age of 2, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings. Masking remains optional in outdoor settings, where the risk of COVID-19 transmission is lower.
On July 27, the CDC issued updated guidance that everyone (including fully vaccinated individuals) in areas with “substantial and high transmission” wear a mask in public indoor settings to help prevent spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant. The CDC defined four levels of community transmission: low, moderate, substantial, and high. Based on Chicago’s population, more than 200 new COVID-19 case diagnoses per day moves the city into CDC’s “substantial” category of local transmission, while more than 400 new cases per day moves the city into CDC’s “high” transmission category. These are the same cutoffs Chicago has used to determine COVID-19 community risk for more than a year.
Today Chicago surpassed 200 new COVID-19 cases per day and has therefore moved into the CDC’s “substantial” category of local transmission. Chicago data is updated every weekday at chi.gov/coviddash.
CDPH recommends businesses, employers, and event organizers require universal masking in all public indoor settings. In outdoor settings, masks remain optional, no changes are being made to the recommendations for social distancing. Vaccines have been essential in the fight against COVID-19. Last year, before safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines were widely available, Chicago only had 13 days between mid-March and the end of the year with fewer than 200 cases per day. In contrast, before today Chicago had consistently been below that benchmark since late May 2021. We thank all of the Chicagoans who have already made the choice to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to help protect themselves, their families, and Chicago.
Chicago Public Schools has already announced universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors when schools reopen on August 30, which is in line with CDC and CDPH guidance. Masks also remain mandated for all on all forms of public transportation nationwide, including ride shares, and in many high-risk settings, like health care.
Remember, the best protection against COVID-19 and the Delta variant continues to be vaccination, including getting both doses if you get a two-dose vaccine. CDPH strongly urges anyone age 12 and older who isn’t yet vaccinated to get vaccinated right away. Chicago residents should call 312-746-4835 or visit chi.gov/covidvax for help getting a vaccine.

Protect Chicago At Home Program Expansion
|
|
The Chicago Department of Public Health announced an expansion of its in-home vaccination program, Protect Chicago At Home, with $25 Visa gift cards offered to everyone vaccinated at home. Everyone 12 and up is eligible to receive a vaccine and a gift card. Appointments can be booked now and gift card distribution will begin August 2.
Since its inception, Protect Chicago At Home has been operating near full capacity and the City has added additional providers to expand appointments. Now, to meet ongoing strong demand, and vaccinate even more Chicagoans, the City is doubling capacity to 900 appointments per week and extending operating hours weekdays until 6:30 p.m. The added capacity should decrease wait times for at-home appointments which are currently fully booked two weeks out.
In-home vaccination offers a choice between the Pfizer (age 12 and older) and Johnson & Johnson (age 18 and older) vaccines. Up to ten people can be vaccinated at a time, so Chicagoans can invite family, friends, or neighbors to their home to be vaccinated together. Appointments are available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
To date, the City has administered vaccines to more than 5,800 Chicagoans in their homes. Initially launched in March to bring vaccines to homebound seniors and people with disabilities, the program expanded to all seniors in May, and to all Chicagoans in June. It is the only on-demand, in-home vaccination program now available to all residents age 12 and up in the U.S.
The expansion of Protect Chicago At Home comes as the City-run vaccination sites closed last weekend in Chicago’s planned move from fixed vaccination sites to more hyperlocal and at-home distribution to reach Chicagoans who still need their COVID-19 vaccine.
Since January, more than 457,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses were administered at City-run Points of Dispensing (PODs) and the United Center. As of July 26, over 51 percent of Chicago's population has completed a vaccine series.

On the occasion of the Frida Kahlo: Timeless exhibition at the Cleve Carney Museum of Art and the McAninch Arts Center at the College of DuPage (June 5 – September 6, 2021), the piece will feature and transform several of Kahlo’s most recognizable works including Self Portrait with Small Monkey (1945) and Self Portrait in a Velvet Dress (1926). In conjunction with the Art Institute of Chicago’s presentation of The Obama Portraits, we are presenting a dynamically animated projection of the portraits of President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama by Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald, respectively. Former Chicago residents, the Obamas have a unique connection to the city. Wiley painted President Obama against greenery, with chrysanthemums; the flowers have symbolic meaning as the official flower of Chicago. Amy Sherald captured the former First Lady against light-blue background, sitting and gazing directly at the viewer. Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald are the first African American artists commissioned to paint portraits for the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery’s collection of a former President and First Lady. A musical score will accompany the piece. The original paintings that inspire our projections can be viewed at the Art Institute of Chicago June 18 – August 15.

Volunteer Opportunity in the 42nd Ward
|
|
Almost Home Kids (AHK) is a short-term community-based pediatric healthcare center that brings together medical professionals, recreational volunteers, community providers, sponsors, donors, friends, corporate and civic partners. Open since 2012, AHK is licensed by the Department of Public Health and located at 211 E. Grand Ave (on the 6th floor of the Ronald McDonald House).
Almost Home Kids provides a bridge from hospital to home for children with medical complexities by: educating and empowering families with the training, skills and confidence needed to care for their child in their own home; coordinating all the community-based medical and social services the child and family will need and providing respite care when needed in a home-like setting.
At this time, they are recruiting volunteers that are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 to join their volunteer team. They especially need weekend-only volunteers in Chicago.
As a recreational volunteer you will help with activities with the children such as playing a game, reading a book or just simply rocking a baby to sleep. Opportunities are available 7 days a week for a 2-hour shift commitment each time. You can self-select your shifts making it very flexible and convenient.
Please reach out to Lisa Snow, Community Outreach Coordinator at [email protected] or call her at (630) 786-1755 to learn more about how to sign up for an orientation and make a difference at Almost Home Kids.
