Mandi Marcus:

I am very excited to teach kindergarten at Loma Portal.   I know we are going to have a great year!  My teaching career began here at Loma Portal in Mrs. Maguadda's classroom as a student teacher about six years ago. Since then I've taught fourth grade and science at two other wonderful schools.  My classroom is a student-centered learning place focused on academic growth through creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking.  I believe that students learn best when they enjoy learning and are given opportunities to explore their natural curiosities with guided support.   I have an MA in Educational Technology, GATE Certification, and am a National Geographic Educator. In addition to my work as a classroom teacher, I serve as Program Coordinator for the International Studies Teacher Education Program based at SDSU.  In my spare time I enjoy live music, travel, good food and the great outdoors.

Carrie Jiampa:

My name is Carrie Jiampa and I am super excited to be teaching kindergarten at Loma Portal. This year will be my twelfth year as a teacher in San Diego Unified and my third year teaching kindergarten. I have taught from kindergarten all the way to 6th grade and I love teaching kindergarten!

I wanted to be a teacher from the time I was a child. I had a teacher, Mr. Duncan, who made school a magical and wonderful place to learn and I knew that I wanted to share that with kids when I grew up.  I feel honored to be able to help foster a love of lifelong learning and responsibility with my students.

I have two children. My daughter, Maddie, is 5 and will hopefully be attending Loma Portal. My son, Ryder, is 3 and is starting preschool in Point Loma. My husband Nick is also a teacher and teaches at Dana Middle School. As a family we love to spend time in the ocean and in nature. We live in Imperial Beach and enjoy camping and traveling in Baja.

I grew up in Redondo Beach and moved to San Diego to attend SDSU where I received my undergraduate degree. At SDSU I focused on science and sociology. I went on to attend Azusa Pacific for my teaching credential and Master's of Education degree with an emphasis on teaching writing. I recently went back and earned an Adaptive Physical Education authorization.

I look forward to becoming a part of the Loma Portal family both as a parent and as a teacher.

Steam Lab/ Ecological School Yard -  Work Day
Saturday, September 16th -  9am -3pm

Like to work outside? Like to work in the yard/garden? Then, come lend a hand during our work day to benefit Loma Portal's Steam Lab/Ecological School Yard.  This outdoor area is being prepped for our teachers to be able to bring the classroom and the students outside to learn. We have multiple workdays throughout the year. The following agenda is to help get ready for this upcoming school year:
  • Shade in the steam lab
  • Shade in the garden
  • Planting and mulching the garden
  • Planning the Giving Tree Mural
Lunch and drinks will be provided. So, gather your family up for some outdoor fun.  Come for an hour or stay the entire time. We're happy to have all the help we can get! The kids love to pitch in and help. It really is a good time. No "green thumbs" needed! Hope to see you there!
