Lone Star College-Houston North • Backpack Drive
|
|
|
Community Matters is one of our college values and it was on full display earlier this month. Led by Community Relations Executive Director Ashley Turner and her team, we were able to give out nearly 400 backpacks with school supplies.
We had bought several so we could participate in the YMCA Operation Backpack. When this event did not happen, the CR team went to work. Several backpacks were donated to an elementary school. Others, were donated to the Houston Public Library as part of our support of the summer literacy initiative (in which many of our faculty and staff participated), and the rest were given out (300) at a drive-through backpack drive to 135 cars on Thursday, September 3.
In terms of the event, we were scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. However, people started showing up around 3:30 p.m.— before we were fully set-up. By 5:30 p.m., we had given out all backpacks! We hope this brought as much joy to our community as it did to us.

LSC-Houston North and Comcast partner to serve students
|

"When March hit, it changed our world tremendously," said Wright. Wright and the college administration had to completely shift direction to find a way to get 20% of the student body the technology they needed to complete their semester online, or risk losing them entirely. "We're talking about 400-500 students who would have had to stop their education completely," added Wright.
Through the Internet Essentials program—the largest broadband adoption program in the country—students in need were able to get approved for internet access at no cost for six months. After this time period, eligible students can continue the service at $9.95 per month.

The Gulf Coast Community Services Association, Inc. (GCCSA) has announced that it will provide up to $300,000 in aid to eligible Lone Star College-Houston North students who have been negatively impacted by COVID-19.
“We have some of the hardest-working and most resilient students in the entire Lone Star College system,” said Dr. Quentin Wright, LSC-Houston North President.
“However, when there are social and economic disruptions such as what has happened with COVID-19, they are often disproportionately impacted,” Wright said. “The help from Gulf Coast Community Services Association. will go a long way in helping these students get through this period.”

Did You Know?
At LSC-Houston North we put students first. Each first time in college student receives a faculty mentor to help guide them through their first year of college. Research indicates that effective mentoring is one of the most powerful relationships for influencing human behavior.
Sometimes, all a student need is someone to lend a caring ear. Just being able to speak to someone and share troubles, feelings, emotions and fears has a way of making these issues seem smaller. Our mentors are in place to provide guidance for our students and steer them in the right direction.
