Welcome to Lonesome Dove Weekly, a 10-week journey into all things Lonesome Dove and Larry McMurtry, presented by the University Park Public Library, in partnership with the Friends of the University Park Public Library’s Meet Me at the Library Series and with support from a grant from La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas.

Each week, this newsletter will take you deeper into the world of the novel with behind-the-scenes literary insights, stories from McMurtry’s life and career, fascinating Texas history, memorable characters, adaptations, interviews, recommended reading, and previews of upcoming Library programs inspired by this American classic.

As part of the 2026 UP Public Library Community Read, this community-wide initiative invites residents to read and discuss a shared title while exploring the themes, places, and legacy that make Lonesome Dove such an enduring work.

Beginning May 26, participants may register at the Library for this weekly newsletter and sign up to receive a free copy of the book, while supplies last (library card required). Programs and events will continue through August 2026.

Join the UP Public Library for a special screening of the first episode of the acclaimed 1986 miniseries adaptation of Lonesome Dove as part of the Community Read.

Follow retired Texas Rangers Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call on the beginning of their epic journey across the American West in this unforgettable adaptation of Larry McMurtry’s beloved novel.

The screening will take place in the 3rd floor Community Room.

Meet Me At The Library Series: George Getschow

George Getschow is an author and former Wall Street Journal editor who now serves as director of the Larry McMurtry Literary Center. Through his leadership, he continues to honor Larry McMurtry’s legacy by fostering a vibrant community of readers and writers in Archer City.

The presentation will be held at 7pm in the UP Public Library 3rd Floor Community Room. Light refreshments will be served at 6:30pm. The program is free and open to all but reservations are recommended.
