Long Island is a special place year-round, and as an Island our natural and tourism assets are a key driver for our economy, especially during the summer months.

Matt chats with Kristen Reynolds, the President & CEO of Discover Long Island; George “Chip” Gorman, Regional Director of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation; and Michael Pfaff, General Manager of the Long Island Ducks. 

Policy Updates
The New York State Governor primary results from yesterday's election are in!

  • The Democratic winner for Governor is Kathy Hochul and Antonio Delgado for Lt. Governor, and the Republican winner is Lee Zeldin for Governor (his Lt Governor running mate Alison Esposito did not have an opponent).

  • Hochul, Zeldin, Larry Sharpe (Libertarian candidate) and Jumaane Williams (Working Families Party Candidate) will face off on November 8, 2022 in the general election.

  • Locally, Vincent Puleo won the Republican primary for Suffolk County Clerk against Judith Pascale.

  • The Republican primary for the 4th Assembly District between Edward A. Flood and Thomas Wiermann has not been called yet.

  • The Congressional and New York State Senate primaries will be held on August 23, 2022

Governor Hochul is convening a special session of the New York State Legislature starting June 30th to consider gun safety legislation in response to the recent Supreme Court decision. Read the Statement from LIA President & CEO Matt Cohen on gun safety.

New York State just released information for a new tax credit for small businesses with 100 or fewer or employees for Covid-related capital costs. The tax credit will cover 50% of costs up to $50,000 (a $25,000 maximum credit). Click here to check eligibility.

The Long Island Association joined business organizations statewide in opposing federal proposed anti-trust legislation, which would hinder innovation and negatively impact small businesses.

Matt Cohen, President & CEO of the Long Island Association, and John Durso, President of the Long Island Federation of Labor, were the only two representatives from Long Island appointed to serve on the "New New York" Panel, which includes 56 leaders from across sectors who are developing actionable recommendations for vibrant and inclusive business districts. The LIA joined with local leaders in calling for the electrification of the Long Island Rail Road Port Jefferson branch. Newsday coverage.

The Long Island Rail Road also released the time tables for Grand Central Madison on the same day that LIRR Interim President Catherine Rinaldi (also an LIA Board member) spoke to the LIA. Newsday coverage.

Matt Cohen issued a statement on Twitter supporting the redevelopment of Penn Station.

New LIA Small Business Support Program

On Thursday, June 16th, the LIA held its first Small Business Conference where LIA President & CEO Matt Cohen announced the new LIA Small Business Support Program and a webpage: www.longislandassociation.org/small-business
to provide enhanced resources to our region’s small businesses.

At the conference, keynote speakers Marlene Cintron, Atlantic Regional Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration & Ron Busby Sr., President/CEO of the U.S. Black Chambers (USBC) spoke about the importance of chambers. We also welcome small business experts who gave information during the breakout sessions. 
On June 14th, Matt Cohen joined the Huntington Chamber of Commerce, Huntington Town Supervisor Ed Smyth and Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney at the Paramount to speak at the Huntington Chamber breakfast series "Current State of Affairs" to discuss issues important to small businesses.
On June 10th the Child Care Council of Suffolk held their Annual Meeting, where LIA's President & CEO Matt Cohen was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Long Island Business News featured child care in a recent cover story. Child care is a business issue, and safe, accessible and affordable child care supports our economy.
On June 9th, the LIA joined the New York League of Conservation Voters, Climate Jobs NY, the Long Island Federation of Labor, Orsted/Eversource, and NY Assemblyman Fred Thiele to discusss offshore wind at the latest installment of the What’s Brewin’ Offshore event series held at Westhampton Beach Brewing Co.
On June 7th, the LIA's Financial Services & Tax Policy Committee hosted a fireside chat with Adrienne A. Harris, Superintendent of the New York State Department of Financial Services.
On June 2nd, the business community heard about historic LIRR
projects launching in 2022 - GrandCentralMadison and ThirdTrack - from LIRR Interim President Catherine Rinaldi. She also announced the new train timetables.
