Applications are open for a new grant for early-stage businesses in New York State. Grant amounts range between $5,000 - $25,000 depending on the size of the business. Visit the grant portal for more information and eligibility: https://nyseedgrant.com/
New York State has lifted the masks on public transportation. Masks are still required in health care facilities. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission also recently released revised guidance for the workplace. Newsday coverage.
The Long Island Association continues to oppose the Interest Assessment Surcharge on businesses resulting from New York State borrowing from the federal government for the Unemployment Insurance Fund. More information on the NYS Department of Labor website.
New York State recently strengthened gun laws in response to the recent Supreme Court Case regarding concealed carry, including a list of sensitive locations where firearms are prohibited. People with concealed carry licenses cannot bring their firearm into a private establishment unless the owner expressly allows it. See the New York State FAQs on the new laws.
Governor Hochul announced a NYSERDA Request for Proposals for 2,000 megawatts or more of new large-scale renewable energy projects. The bid package can be found here.
The New York State Department of Labor has expanded its Virtual Career Center, a cutting-edge online platform to help New Yorkers accelerate their career search.
The LIRR recently surpassed 200,000 riders on a weekday for the first time since March 2020. This same month, the MTA Board approved a contact of up to $57.9 million for the design and preliminary engineering on the Penn Station Redevelopment to a joint venture between FXCollaborative Architects and WSP USA.
The New York State Office of Cannabis Management has allocated as many as 20 conditional licenses for adult-use cannabis retail dispensaries with a deadline of September 30, 2022. The Executive Director of the New York State Office of Cannabis Management recently stated that he expects the first retailers to be able to open by the end of the year.
New York State was awarded $500 million from the federal government to support small businesses and will be expanding existing programs and introducing new ones to be administered by Empire State Development. For more information visit www.ny.gov/ssbci

The U.S. Small Business Administration is hosting a free Small Business Cyber Summit on October 25th from 12pm - 5pm where businesses will learn the best practices and resources to help small businesses protect against cyber-attacks during National Cybersecurity Month. Governor Hochul announced a new Seed Fund for early stage small businesses impacted by the pandemic. There is a total of $200 million in funding available and the grant amounts range from $5,000 to $25,000 depending on gross receipts reported in the 2020 or 2021 business federal tax return.
