Global ImageWorks is proud to announce the addition of Look At Us to our archival collection. This twenty-four episode documentary series captures the full spectrum of American life in 1981 with a distinctive mixture of gravity and levity. Topics range from the exploitation of undocumented immigrants to video dating, from the nuclear power debate to a zoo for rejected and disabled animals.

The collection spans a wide range of themes:

Nuclear and Radiation Hazards include citizens of St. George, Utah suing the government over health effects from 1950s atomic testing. The series also covers soldiers exposed to radiation during Cold War experiments, the nuclear energy debate after Three Mile Island, and radioactive waste from uranium mining in South Dakota.

Youth and Adolescent Struggles feature investigations into teenage runaways exploited by pimps in major cities and a doubling of alcoholism among 12-to-17-year-olds. The series also documents undercover narcotics agents infiltrating high school drug scenes and the cruising and roller skating crazes.

Drug Abuse and Public Health document the Valium controversy and widespread prescription drug abuse. Other segments cover marijuana’s transformation into a multi-billion dollar domestic crop in Northern California and soaring hospital costs.

Sexual Politics and Alternative Lifestyles examine heated debates over sex education in schools and workplace sexual harassment affecting both women and men. The series also explores the use of sex surrogates in therapy.

Crime and Public Safety feature the Crime Stoppers program in Albuquerque and senior citizens learning martial arts to defend against street crime. Additional segments cover the shoplifting epidemic and the House of Umoja’s success in reducing gang violence.

Immigration and Border Issues provide extensive coverage of illegal immigration at the U.S.–Mexico border. Segments examine the dangers faced by immigrants from border bandits and coyotes and the economic exploitation of undocumented workers in the garment and service industries.

American Eccentrics profile a Michigan man broadcasting music into space to contact extraterrestrials and the Rainbow Man superfan spreading religious messages at sporting events. Other segments feature the world’s weirdest zoo for rejected and disabled animals and a Las Vegas showgirl who doubled as a Sunday school teacher.

Produced by George Schlatter of Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In and Real People fame, Look At Us completes a trilogy of Schlatter series. Alongside Real People and Speak Up America, these three series capture a pivotal moment when television discovered the most compelling stories were the real ones.
