SRV Council PTA BOE Recall Study
|
|
SRVCPTA STUDY REPORT ON THE
BOE MEMBER RECALL EFFORT
Make an Informed Decision
Faced with a potential recall of San Ramon Valley Unified School District (SRVUSD) Board of Education (BOE) members during a global pandemic, the San Ramon Valley Council of PTAs (Council) formed a study work group to investigate the recall petition of the BOE members and its impact on students and the District.
Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) is one of the oldest advocacy groups charged with responsibility for providing information and creating a connection between schools and families. Primary goals of PTA include advocating for the education, health, safety, and well-being of all children, and informing, engaging and empowering members and the public on issues concerning children and families.
The recall petitions are being circulated now. Should a sufficient number of signatures be collected, the District would be required to pay the costs of the special election, regardless of the ultimate outcome of the recall effort. This committee encourages all parents, guardians, and registered voters to make an informed decision as to whether or not to sign the recall petition.

Welcome New AP Nikki Chaplin

INTRODUCING ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, NIKKI CHAPLAN!
My name is Nikki Chaplan and I have worked in SRVUSD since April 2005. I taught English at Monte Vista for eight years before spending four years as MV's Literacy Teacher on Special Assignment. The past three years I has worked at Pine Valley and Iron Horse Middle Schools as an assistant principal. I am especially looking forward to working with the high school students as they transition into adulthood. My educational passions are litearcy as means to all content areas and it is my job to break down barriers for students.
My husband and I have two daughters ages 10 and 13. We enjoy going to A's games, BBQ's, and chasing after their two dogs.
I am incredibly honored to be a part of San Ramon Valley and look forward to supported the Wolfpack. I work with students whose last names start with Oc-Z.

*FEBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH*
|
|
|
WHAT IT IS
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a focused time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. It is an opportunity to highlight the achievements of leaders and every day people who have made a difference in helping to create a more just society- in all careers and walks of life.
Making Black history a part of history learning all year long is one way to ensure that the single narrative is deconstructed. Having a month dedicated to its study elevates the importance of recognizing that history has not been told in an equitable landscape. Therefore, we set aside specific time to make sure we are exploring Black history more deeply because textbooks and the media are notorious for omitting information or accurate narratives about the struggles of marginalized communities, from their perspectives. There are reparations to be made with communities that have been silenced. Historical patterns are cyclical. Unpacking disparities opens up space to recognize areas we can be better as a society, and subsequently, how we can work to interrupt systems that are not inclusive.
WHAT IT’S NOT:
Black History is not about trivializing or tokenizing. While we know it’s important to lift the work of those who made a difference (Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr.), it needs to be done in context of the larger social movement or historical place. Great leaders don’t make history all by themselves. Leaders are never a token of their culture or ethnicity. Like all cultures, no single person is representative of a culture’s entire beliefs or values. Each individual identity is a part of the collective. It is important to understand how the “regular” people influenced these social movements, and dig deeper into the stories and societal dynamics.
How do we do that?
When we seek counter-narratives and resources which frame history from a non-Eurocentric perspective, we are making an intentional effort to ensure historic figures and stories are not misrepresented. Listen and believe BIPOC stories without judgement. Reflect on how we may automatically fall back into beliefs that are binary (right-wrong / good-bad / acceptable-unacceptable) instead of allowing space for fluidity of ideas and sometimes being able to sit in our own discomfort as we are realizing that implicit bias exists for all of us. This also means we should now talk about Black history in solely a “feel-good” language or as a thing of the past. This fails to help us examine how racism manifests itself today.
A FEW RESOURCES:
This is the counter-narrative, the story often untold, of how slavery began. The intended audience is classrooms but anyone can learn from this resource In August of 1619, a ship carrying more than 20 enslaved Africans arrived in the English colony of Virginia. America was not yet America, but this was the moment it began. No aspect of the country that would be formed here has been untouched by the 250 years of slavery that followed.

Feb. 24th: 5pm PT on Zoom

When we are too focused on grades and performance, we deny our children the time and energy they need to tackle the demanding work of growing up. In this presentation, you’ll learn how you can establish a healthier home environment for your school-aged child, reduce academic stress without sacrificing achievement, and increase your child’s resilience, creativity, and well-being. Participants will examine the tension that parents, students, and teachers often experience during remote and in-person learning over issues such as homework, grades, and the culture of competition.
