Superb Cinematic Scores!
I didn’t understand the movie but loved the music in Fellini’s Juliet of the Spirits. While the story about a woman losing her mind featured weird visuals, it was the music that took me away into movie glory. Composer Nino Rota’s lively, sometimes discordant score charmed this budding film buff. The music has stayed with me for months.
Later I would discover Rota’s genius for movie music. He composed the scores for Godfather 1 and 2, La Dolce Vita, Death on the Nile, La Strada, and my favorite Shakespeare adaptation of Taming of the Shrew with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

The Italian composer was raised in a family of musicians, creating an opera by the time he was thirteen. Move over, Mozart! His long association with Fellini brought Rota every award possible and worldwide acclaim.
You don't enter the world of film scores without recognizing the works of John Williams. His music is the soundtrack of generations: E.T. The Extraterrestrial, Jaws, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Superman soar above the rest of many living composers. Still, his range is extraordinary with Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, and Lincoln's haunting score. Watching a YouTube interview with Williams and his collaborator Steven Spielberg, I was struck by how subdued, and almost shy, this musical genius is.
To enter the world of jazz scores, visit Elmer Bernstein. His driving themes enhance the plot and disturbed characters in The Man with the Golden Arm, Sweet Smell of Success, and Walk on the Wild Side. When his jazz themes took five, a rousing western became a classic in The Magnificent Seven. And who can forget the poignant To Kill a Mockingbird? Bernstein was influenced by Bernard Hermann, who collaborated with Alfred Hitchcock on the scores for Psycho, Vertigo, and many more.
Right up there with John Williams is Maurice Jarre. Who can watch Lawrence of Arabia without noticing how the music moves along with the sweeping sands and eccentric Lawrence himself? Jarre was perfection with director David Lean. Doctor Zhivago followed Lawrence, and Jarre’s mastery was noted worldwide. In A Passage to India, Gorillas in the Mist, Witness, and Ryan’s Daughter, the music brilliantly matched the movie, telling listeners Jarre was in charge.
Ennio Morricone added one of my favorite scores in Cinema Paradiso, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and The Mission. Max Steiner developed characters as well as unforgettable themes for Gone with the Wind and King Kong. Vangelis's Chariots of Fire, Danny Elfman's imaginative Edward Scissorhands, Hans Zimmer's regal Gladiator, and Rachel Portman's gorgeous Chocolat and The Cider House Rules, all have scores that will keep us hearing the music forever.
Expect Issue 29 on Tuesday, August 11.
Stay well, Friends. We miss you!
