Tazzarin North to Nunatsiavut

Looking Like a Sailboat

2030, Sunday, June 25, 2023

I didn't send you an email yesterday. Instead, Bob and I kept working late. We were back at the boat this morning, trying to get some things done before a bit of a nasty cold front and squall lines came through.

We have moved Tazzarin to a very good slip at the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club. This morning, just before the rain and 35 knot gusty wind arrived, we managed to get the sails on, both the mainsail and the roller furling genoa. So, check out the photo above. Tazzarin is finally looking like a sail boat! She is almost ready to go.

Now the focus shifts to cleaning, provisioning and stowing all the gear for my planned two months north of where we are now. I need to take lots of provisions and lots of spare gear and safety items.

Bob and I are feeling good enough about how ready the boat is, that we may try a short overnight cruise across Conception Bay to Brigus for a night. Then back here. It would be a great test of everything before I truly depart on Friday or Saturday.

On another note, we have been trying a number of the restaurants in the St. John's area. By far the best is Mallard Cottage in the old fishing outport of Quidi Vidi. Bob and I had a fantastic dinner there two nights ago. Fresh mussels were the standout for me. Mallard Cottage is in an historic house that provides lovely ambiance as well. I have eaten there several times in the past and it is always amazing Newfoundland food. You can see Mallard Cottage in the photo below.

I hope you will forgive me for being out of touch yesterday. But, I also figured another email about work on the boat would be a bit dull...
