Our hearts are filled with gratitude, and our heads are filled with excitement! 

Thanks to your tremendous generosity over the past year, the number of young lives enriched through mentoring has grown by leaps and bounds. You understand that lasting, sustainable change must come from within and that investing in dynamic, passionate, local leaders is key to improving the lives of girls and their communities in Southern Africa. 

As we kick off a new year, once again embracing veteran Mentors and welcoming new Mentors, clubs and club members, we look forward to sharing more about the individual lives we touch. We often report on the big picture, but what makes our hearts sing, what feeds our passion, time and dedication, are the changes and transformations we see. We want to share that good news with you. 

After all, the Mentors you support spur the change. Each child or Mentor’s life strengthened by your compassion moves us all closer to equality and dignity. For helping make that possible, we thank you.

Many young people in Dete Township near Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park want to work in the tourism industry, perhaps as a guide, waiter or chef. But after a career guidance day last summer organized by the GSGC-sponsored Tikobane Girls Club, a member wrote to club Mentors stating she wanted to be an engineer. Bakani invited her mother to meet with Tikobane Mentors so they could help her understand that, indeed, girls can be engineers and work outside of tourism.

Then Bakani, a seventh grader, challenged the school to include physics and chemistry curricula in the rural school so she — and other girls — can reach their full potential. The school promised that by this month, January 2022, the sciences would be available to local students.

“As a GSGC-sponsored Mentor, it warms my heart to see girls in our clubs working and shaping their future,” said Mentor Thembelihle Dhlamini. “Instead of choosing the normal careers around the community, they dare and dream big. As a Mentor, it gladdens my heart to work with girls who, one day, will be happy as they realize their dreams.” 

Join Ralph Doggett and friends from Vancouver, Washington to hear about their October visit with GSGC Mentors and youth. They were GSGC’s first international visitors since the pandemic curtailed travel worldwide, and golly, the conversations were powerful and the connections were deep!
