Greetings

This week we're presenting ShowUp, Center for Contemporary Printmaking, and Mattatuck Museum.

With 2024 coming to an end, many galleries and museums take a festive approach to their programming - more on that in the next Eblast! But these three exhibitions use what remains of 2024 (and some of 2025) to showcase a range of artwork disconnected from the winter season but closely connected to the communities, time periods and events that help inform what's on display.

The deadline to advertise in the January / February edition of Artscope Magazine is Sunday, December 15.

AEROSOL: Boston’s Graffiti DNA, its Origin and Evolution at ShowUp

in Boston, Massachusetts, December 6 to February 16, 2025

ShowUp presents AEROSOL: Boston’s Graffiti DNA, its Origin and Evolution. This exhibition, created in collaboration between journalist Jennifer Mancuso and graffiti writer Thomas “Kwest” Burns who take on the history and visual language of graffiti. The show features eight grafitti artists and archival photography by John Brewer. According to a curatorial statement, the featured artists "came up under the same conditions as Kwest [and] practiced their skill on a canvas that wasn’t theirs to make a mark on a city that was." Bright colors, bold, eye-catching designs and a lineage of visual storytelling and identity characterize this exhibition. The gallery is open Thursday to Saturday from 12 to 5 p.m., Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Monday through Wednesday by appointment. ShowUp is located at 524B Harrison Avenue Boston MA. Center for Contemporary Printmaking presents Civic/Civil Engagement: Annual Members Exhibition, an annual show featuring 51 artists who were asked to approach the topic of civil civic engagement through their printmaking. With another year of tumultuous politics in the United States, these artists responded in strength and creativity to an unstable and, at times, uncomfortable political landscape. Juror Carey Mack Weber, Fairfield University Art Museum Executive Director, selected a best in show (see image above), second prize winner and several honorable mentions from the entries. The gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. Center for Contemporary Printmaking is located at Mathews Park, 299 West Avenue, Norwalk, CT. Mattatuck Museum presents At First Light: American Tonalism, a show that explores the emergence and history of Tonalism as a response to the American Civil War. Loose brush strokes and subdued tones "gave the movement its name and created hazy and dreamlike compositions that captured the qualities of light at dawn and dusk," according to a curatorial statement. The exhibition features 17 artists as well as archival materials that expand upon the work on display. "The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mattatuck Museum is located at 144 West Main Street, Waterbury, CT.
