Providence Recap
Looking back at May 2021
|
|
Dear Providence Community,
We made it! With graduation in person and on campus, May 29th marked the 63rd commencement exercises of Providence High School, and we sent the Class of 2021 off to the next phase of their lives. As people of Providence, these young people are truly prepared to improve our world and live the legacy of the Sisters of Providence. As we head into summer, we are excited to be preparing for a fully re-opened campus in the fall and cannot wait to welcome back all of our students.
I wish everyone a restful and safe summer and look forward to welcoming many of you back to campus next year.
In Providence,
Scott McLarty
Head of School

Class of 2021 Graduation
For the first time in Providence High School's history, the Baccalaureate Mass and graduation were celebrated on campus on May 28 and 29, respectively! Having both milestone events on campus was especially meaningful as it provided the Class of 2021 the chance to walk the halls of campus one last time before officially saying goodbye.
We wish our newest graduates well on this next phase of their lives! View event photos.

Happy Retirement, Mrs. Hickey!
Mrs. Claire Hickey joined the Providence community in 1995 and brought with her a fierce commitment to her Catholic faith and a desire to share this with her students. During her time in the Religious Studies department, she held her students to the same high standard she expected of herself. Her love of, and dedication to the school took her to new roles on campus and outside her lifelong vocation. Gathering, organizing, and coordinating the data for our accreditations tapped into her attention to detail and tenacity that helped set PHS up as a data-friendly institution with a strong foundation for our next self-study.
Help us wish Mrs. Hickey well on her retirement! Record a short video and submit it by Wednesday, June 16 to be included.

COVID-19 Memorial
Our Campus Ministry Department created a memorial around our Mother Mary statue to honor the lives of those lost during this past year, especially those lost to COVID-19. Students wrote the names of their deceased loved ones on rocks and placed the rocks around the statue as they thought of and prayed for those no longer with us. This was a representation of the Paschal mystery and the stone that was rolled away, revealing to the disciples that Jesus has risen.

Hope for the Future
Students reflected on the resurrection of Jesus and wrote down their hopes for the future on sticky notes. The inspirational notes were placed on the doors to the chapel to symbolize our openness to new life and our future hopes.

Faculty Guest Speaker:
Dr. Joshua Palkki
Dr. Joshua Palkki, Assistant Professor of Music Education at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach, and activist for LGBTQ+ inclusion in music education, gave a virtual presentation to the faculty and staff on the topics of "Honoring Gender Diversity in 21st Century Schools” and “Being Safe People for LGBTQ+ Students.” We thank Dr. Palkki for engaging our faculty and staff in some significant dialogue on gender diversity and social justice within the LGBTQ+ community!

Providence High Arts Productions
The talented student actors in our Performing Arts Department presented The Theory of Relativity. The show offered a joyous and moving look at our surprisingly interconnected lives seen through a seemingly unrelated collection of songs, scenes, and monologues.
The Virtual High Arts Finale & Awards, the culminating event in Providence High Arts' Hourglass season of shows, featured performances by Choral Music, Instrumental Music, Dance 1, and other surprises. Additionally, Providence High artists were celebrated for their achievements in this very unique year, and those who are moving on to new heights upon graduation were honored.
Check out our website for videos of these performances!
