Description:

This 3-hour training will address the growing need for trauma-informed supervision in the field of play therapy. By grounding developmental supervision with SAMHSA’s (2014) six trauma-informed principles, participants will learn how to support supervisees in challenges unique to play therapy. Participants will explore how play-based and expressive modalities can be used within supervision to create safe, supportive, and empowering spaces for supervisees. Special attention will be given to navigating challenges such as maintaining therapeutic boundaries, managing confidentiality with children and caregivers, treating the many forms of trauma and crises that manifest in childhood, and addressing compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. Through experiential activities and hands-on exploration, supervisors will learn ways to help their supervisees address their countertransference, strengthen resilience, and enhance their capacity to engage in trauma-informed, developmentally sensitive, and playful practices.

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply SAMHSA’s six trauma-informed principles within supervision sessions to support play therapists working with children and families
  • Integrate play-based and expressive supervision techniques to address challenges such as boundaries, confidentiality, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma.
  • Demonstrate strategies for recognizing and processing countertransference through experiential, creative methods that promote reflection and resilience in both supervisor and supervisee.
