BUSINESS NEWS

Washington's new heat pump rules clear final hurdle

Final decision: Last week, the State Building Code Council gave final approval to state rules requiring electric heat pumps in most new homes, set to take effect March 15, 2024. The reworked rules offer builders incentives for installing heat pumps, but is still a de facto ban on natural gas in new homes.

Housing cost impacts: Critics of the new rules continue to warn the regulations will effectively phase out natural gas in new homes, raising costs for builders, home buyers and renters.

  • “I find it’s going to make things way too expensive,” Tom Handy, a Whitman County commissioner and council member, told The Washington State Standard. "I think it’s going to hurt affordable housing. I think it’s going to hurt small builders."

Possible legal challenges: Washington's heat pump saga may not be over. Some say the state's new rules continue to violate federal law concerning energy use and natural gas appliances.
