Hello Nicole,

The cultural shame attached to menstruation and the lack of adequate menstrual health supplies disempowers girls and women

Period poverty may impact educational and livelihood opportunities, leading to life-long cycles of poverty. In communities where families may have to make extremely difficult decisions about how household funds are spent; for example, deciding between food or menstrual pads, Wunders helps eliminate a barrier for girls to stay in school.

The power of investing in girls and women is evident. A girl can earn up to 20% more as an adult for each additional school year she completes. [1] There are decades of research showing that prioritizing girls' education is a game changer for community development and leads to “faster poverty reduction, better maternal health, lower child mortality, greater HIV prevention, and reduced violence”. [2] The economic opportunity of educating girls and women doesn’t stop within the family but creates a ripple effect in her community.

“Wunders has been quite impactful to the lives of girls and women. Since Wunders started, we have received noteworthy testimonies on how their lives have changed since connecting with Wunders Kenya. Most of the school girls that were initially unable to attend school, due to lack of the necessary aid during their period, can now comfortably attend school because of the Wunders kits.” Lucy, Wunders Kenya Treasurer

Prioritizing menstrual health education, anti-gender-based violence training, and sustainable supplies greatly increases opportunities and reduces the ever-growing vulnerabilities to lifelong poverty and human trafficking.

Thanks to Wunders, girls and women live with greater stability and hope for the future.

We look forward to working closely with Set Free teams around the world to help keep more girls in school.
