A Reflection from Chaplain Erin | |
GIVE HER THE BOOT!
Sometime in December, I came down with a case of Achilles Tendonitis. The doctor told me to keep it wrapped and elevated, take anti-inflammatories, and stay off it. (Ridiculous advice!) I did try to be a compliant patient, but although it got better, new symptoms began. My doctor sent me to the ankle guy who scanned it and determined that I have torn a tendon, AND if it doesn’t heal on its own, I am going to have to surgically treat it! (Gulp!)
All of this brings me to the point of this reflection. I am in a boot.
The boot keeps my ankle from flexing in either direction. That’s good. The curved bottom also keeps me from having any sense of balance. It comes all the way to my kneecap, so I can’t bend, walk for any distance, or drive. I find myself fighting the situation. (And I might be just a little bit whiny!) It is cumbersome and uncomfortable, and I really don’t like it!
Here I am, in something designed to support and help me heal, and all I do is complain about it. How human. The Bible tells us all kinds of stories of God rescuing the people who then forget about the big picture (we’ve escaped slavery in Egypt!) They began focusing on their complaints (we’re sick of manna and want something else!)
| |
|
With God’s help, I hope to focus on all the good that is happening. I’m in pretty good shape for an old lady! My kids and my grandkids are happy and healthy! My husband and I woke up in a comfortable bed next to a best friend this morning! I am living the dream! I have so much for which to be grateful. I want to have an attitude of gratitude.
I may need some help. Please keep me in your prayers, and if I start complaining, threaten to kick me in the other foot!

The Ragamuffin Gospel: Good News for the Bedraggled, Beat-Up, and Burnt Out
by Brennan Manning
4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 3,508 ratings
Are you bedraggled, beat-up, burnt-out?
Most of us believe in God’s grace—in theory. But somehow we can’t seem to apply it in our daily lives. We continue to see Him as a small-minded bookkeeper, tallying our failures and successes on a score sheet.
Yet God gives us His grace, willingly, no matter what we’ve done. We come to Him as ragamuffins—dirty, bedraggled, and beat-up. And when we sit at His feet, He smiles upon us, the chosen objects of His “furious love.”
Brennan Manning’s now-classic meditation on grace and what it takes to access it—simple honesty—has changed thousands of lives. Now, it will change yours, too.

This semester we will be diving into the "texts of terror" found in the Bible: the stories of hardship, pain, and sorrow, which can teach readers how to cultivate practical compassion. In the words of theologian Phyllis Trible, "Sad stories do not have happy endings...but they may yield new beginnings." Within this Bible study, students will confront hard topics, wrestle with what to do, and serve with organizations that will directly alleviate the modern day terrors faced by our community (NourishPHX, A New Leaf, St. Vincent de Paul).

PICK TWO!
Don Peters, the chair for the All Saints' Creative Group invited us all to "Pick Two" pieces of art you have created to display in this next month or two exhibit of the All Saints' Creative Community.
I take literally thousands of photos between church and my personal obessession with photography. While Mark, the spouse, will usually comment that 78% of my pics have the neck of the same darn horse in the foreground, I am always "Johnnie on the Spot" when it comes to snapping a photo.
And the fact that we do it on our Jetsons Communicator device that is with us 24/7 makes it even easier.
So having to choose 2 pictures for this show was kind of torture. I had some favorites of the horse, of course, and then my chosen dog and cat photos from my cute kids. I have a collection of flowers, succulents, trees, desert cacti, and then I have the largest collection of many rectors' children in various stages of their lives. So many choices, so many stories behind each one. But I must pick two. Like everyone else in this show.
So I landed on "Riding into the Light" - a spiritually sound wish that when the time comes, I will go there on horseback. And picture number 2 is a little bird on the jail-looking stall Tiger lives in. Hence, the name, "Tiger's Bird." Hope you enjoy them and all the amazing talent our community has put on display in St. Barbara through March 14. I also like taking requests of photos to stimulate my creativity. If you would like to see something in particular, just shoot me an email or a text, I'm game!
