Fremont District 79

Fremont School District 79 is seeking input from the community as they chart their course for the future. Please join them for a community feedback forum on October 17, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. at Fremont Intermediate School to discuss the draft of the District’s Educational Long-Range Facility Plan (ELFP).

Since January 2024, a representative group of 26 staff and community members have been meeting with administrators and architects to develop a 10- to 20-year vision for Fremont’s campus. This ELFP Steering Committee evaluated existing facilities in relation to the District's:

  • Educational goals;
  • Forecasted enrollment growth (up to an additional 1,000 students);
  • Capital maintenance and improvement needs,
  • Projected facility demands for the next 10-20 years; and
  • Financial considerations.

During this session, you will have the opportunity to ask questions, offer suggestions, and help refine the plan prior to the School Board’s consideration.

Community feedback during the October 17 session will be taken into account before the ELFP is presented to the FSD79 Board of Education at its regular meeting on November 18.

Household Chemical Waste Event

Eco Corner from Jenn Cameron

It's Autumn already! And in case you didn't know, the month of October is Oak Awareness Month which was officially declared in 2015.

There are around 20 species of quercus (Latin: oak tree) which are native to Illinois, but it is the White oak (Quercus alba) specifically that is the Official Illinois State Tree. White oaks are a 'keystone species' and are critical to the overall health of Illinois woodland ecosystems. White oaks provide important food (the iconic acorn) and shelter to a wide variety of wildlife (including insect pollinators), and the extensive root system of these important trees slows the process of soil erosion. White oaks are drought-resistant and can live well over 100 years! Mature White oak trees can produce enough acorns to feed local wildlife and the leftovers (buried and forgotten by blue jays and squirrels) germinate which then establishes the next generation(s) of our Official State Tree. In addition, ongoing ecosystem restoration efforts on public and private lands targeting the removal of invasive and densely growing understory plants like buckthorn, garlic mustard, and honeysuckle continue to promote the healthy growth of oaks and other native trees in our Northern Illinois area and across the state.

Fall is a beautiful season to appreciate the majesty of oak trees and learn about their significance to our native Illinois ecosystems.

Welcome to OAKober!
