When the 2017 hurricane season crushed Puerto Rico, Dan Kroger, director of music and liturgy at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach, gathered Treasure Coast musicians to put on a Concert for Hurricane Relief, raising more than $7,000.
With Hurricane Dorian so long out of the news, concern for those devastated in the Bahamas might have faded for some but not for the Treasure Coast Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and Friends. A new Concert for Hurricane Relief will be held at Holy Cross Feb. 16 at 5:30 p.m.
Kroger invites the public to join local musicians and their friends to hear stories "of how the recovery is slowly proceeding" and listen to performances by top local musicians.
The list includes:
Brady Johnson – Christ Church
Daniel Kroger – Holy Cross Church
The Dolls
The Orchid Island trio
Jack VanderPlate – Lutheran Church of the Redeemer
Dolores Mark – St. Helen Church
Dana Clearwater – St. Augustine Church
Steve Giddens
Donald Ingram organ and Eugene Tobey baritone
A collection will be received at intermission.

The Ashley Gang Rides Again
|
The
Martin County Historic Preservation Board has an afternoon of fascinating Florida history in store for you February 10.
Learn about South Florida's most romanticized gang, the notorious Ashley Gang with a presentation by local historian Alice Luckhardt at the Blake Library, John F. and Rita M. Armstrong Wing, at 2351 SE Monterey Road in Stuart.
Following Luckhardt's presentation, which includes her researched video for the event, there will be a showing of the 1973 Ashley Gang-inspired film,
Little Laura and Big John
(rated R), starring Fabian Forte and Karen Black, which was filmed in Martin County and Stuart in 1968.
The presentation will be from 2:00-3:00 p.m. and the film will run from 3:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
This event is FREE.

Florida Carillon Festival
|
The Florida Carillon Festival isn't your typical festival, with arts and crafts, food vendors, face painting, and all the things Floridians might associate with the word.
I have to be honest here. I did not know that Florida has four carillons of note:
Bok Tower Gardens Singing Tower (Lake Wales), Andrew W. Crawford Memorial Carillon (Venice), Dimmitt Memorial Carillon (Clearwater) and Century Tower at University of Florida (Gainesville). My only experience with carillons and carillonneurs has been at Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales.
Florida Carillon Festival at Bok Tower Gardens -
Feb. 14, 1 & 3 P.M.
Included in general admission, free for members

Preston & Child - up a
Crooked River
|
Waves of cheap green slip-ons washing up on Florida's best shelling beach shouldn't necessarily mean there's a crime other than littering to be investigated, but the story takes a sinister turn when it's discovered that each shoe has a human foot inside.
|
The writing team of Preston & Child have brought back silk suit wearing FBI agent Aloysius Pendergast, to figure it out, and that can only mean big trouble's just one step ahead of his team. The longtime friends and writings partners are at Vero Beach Book Center Feb. 7, 6 p.m.

Volunteer Curator Needed for
The Galleries at
First Pres
|
From Jacob Craig, director of music and arts at First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach:
We are looking for one or two dedicated individuals to take over as curators for The Galleries at First Pres. This job would entail interviewing and scheduling artists for three shows per year, assisting with organizing, hanging, and takedown of artwork, as well as organizing the opening receptions for each show. Our prime candidate would be someone with a background in fine art and Art Gallery/Museum operations experience, who regularly communicates through e-mail, and has experience with document scanning, printing, and Microsoft Word. Anyone interested should contact Jacob Craig at
jacobcraig@firstpresvero.org
to schedule an interview.

Vero Beach Museum of Art's Film Series
|
A heads up came in from the Vero Beach Museum of Art this week. The very popular Winter Film Series has several seats still open for the afternoon sessions of its five-week program. The first session is Feb. 11. Museum spokesperson Sophie Wood said films will be "from colder climes
and those in conjunction with the VBMA’s new exhibition
From Homer to Hopper: American Art from The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC."
The films come from Scandinavia and other chilly locales. "One film is
The Other Side of Hope
, a 2017 film from famed Norwegian director, Aki Kaurismäki, whose new works are always much anticipated because he takes his time in deciding what project to select next," Wood said.
|
Diane Thelen will introduce each film and moderate the discussions. Films in the series are open only to series subscribers and not individual tickets are offered. Register at the museum, by phone at 772-231-0707, ext. 136, or
online.
Classes are held Tuesdays Feb. 11 through April 4 at 1:30 p.m. The evening sessions have been sold out.
