Natives Of The Allegheny County Parks
is a handy guide for identifying wildflowers and plants in all 9 Allegheny County Parks. And it's a bookmark, too! We're handing it out at community events, on Allegheny County Ranger wildflower walks at at some Penn State Extension Master Gardener Program events.
Thanks to Paul Wiegman's photographic artistry, these natives jump off the page. Wiegman is known throughout the region for his excellent botanical photographs. He has a degree in botany and spent many years working for the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. He is also a longtime volunteer at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens and takes the official photographs for each new show. Next time you visit the Shop at Phipps, look for his botanical photos on sale there. Or visit his website,

Lucky early-bird POUR ticket buyers win Free All-Season County Pool Family Pass!
|
The lucky Borkowski family of Bethel Park bought early tickets to the South Park Pour At The Park, which automatically entered them in a drawing for a free full season pool pass.
As the winners, this family of four will enjoy unlimited visits to any Allegheny County Pool all season long.
Mr. Borkowski said he was delighted to see the Pour coming to South Park, as the family enjoys many activities there including running, biking, ice skating, Concerts in the Park - and definitely the wave pool! He said South Park is the family's favorite park.
"It is so close and it lets us make some pretty good memories that I hope my kids will never forget."
Congratulations, Borkowskis! Thanks so much for supporting our fundraiser!

Head outdoors and enjoy spring!
FINALLY!!
|
And we can't think of a happier place to send winter packing than the North Park Lake Trail.
This five-mile paved trail circles the iconic North Park Lake, making it the perfect site to train for a race, push a stroller, knock the winter cobwebs off a bicycle or walk the dog. Since so many park visitors took that advice, the Allegheny County Parks Foundation teamed up with Allegheny County to widen the trail, repave the surface and paint new lines to make it safer for all and accommodate more people.
If you are among the thousands who love this trail, consider a donation to our Crowdrise Fund - LOVE THE LOOP - to help defray the costs of completing the Pearce Mill Road portion of the trail. Click

South Park Tree Planting a success - even in the wind and snow!

Two planting sessions in South Park have added nearly 100 trees to enhance the beauty and ecology of one of Allegheny County's busiest parks.
About 45 enthusiastic – and cold – Elizabeth-Forward Middle School students helped plant trees along Sesqui Drive in South Park on an unseasonable April morning alongside the Allegheny County Park Rangers.
The trees were a variety of species, including American Beech, River Birch, American Linden, Sugar Maple, White Oak, Eastern White Pine, Redbud, Serviceberry and Tuliptree. After instructions by representatives from the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC), the students learned how to plant the trees to ensure a long and healthy life.
An earlier planting session with community volunteers Carolyn Savikas and Peg Bittner placed trees on Sunny Slope and Brownsville Roads.
The Allegheny County Parks Foundation thanks all our volunteers and the Allegheny County Parks Department and WPC.
The recommendation to plant more trees was made in the South Park Ecological Assessment. You can learn more about that by going to
www.acparksfoundation.org
. Funding for the trees was made possible by the Peaceable Kingdom Fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation.
THANKS TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED!!

THANK YOU,
COMCAST and GIRL SCOUTS!!
|
|
We learned firsthand the meaning of #COMCASTCARESDAY when nearly 100 local Comcast NBCUniversal employees turned out for an Earth Day volunteerism event at South Park. They gathered sticks and other plant matter, and picked up litter and assorted discarded items for four hours.
And we can't forget the two Castle Shannon Girls Scout Troops 52184 and 52222 who joined in the effort. You make us proud! Thanks to all who showed love for their Allegheny County Parks!
