Volume 4 No. 39 | October 28, 2022 | |
Notes from the Editor:
Last week I mentioned a major plumbing problem. Two weeks after it began, it was resolved. I have to give a shoutout to Jerry, Marty, Craig, Angela, and the ground crew from the county for persisting while staying calm and keeping happy faces. Thanks, too, to Milton at AdvanceLeakPlus.com for standing his ground. Onward and upward, moving so fast toward the holiday season!
I got a text reminder from my dentist about a Monday appointment, with a request to come in costume! Ten to one she won't be giving out candy as the prize.
Here's the link to the St. John webcams. Yes, it really is that gorgeous.

A Nutcracker on the Indian River Insider's Update
CEO Adam Schnell emailed today to tell Arts Blast readers about expanding to a second venue for this year's performances:
"It is a huge undertaking to do the entire show in two separate cities. From the giant trucks we have to rent to get everything to Palm Beach and back (think about it, we have to load and unload them on the way down, on the way back, and then do it all over again when we move into the PAC), the fact that there are two casts of kiddos, plus rehearsing our pros here, plus me driving down to Miami to get the Dimensions folks up to speed, I mean...crazy? Yes please!"
Single Tickets on Sale 11/1
Nutcracker on the Indian River:
December 9 at 7:00pm in Benjamin Hall at The Benjamin School in Palm Beach Gardens
December 29-31 (including Nutcracker for All) at VBHS PAC
Between the two cities, the show will feature more than 30 professional dancers and 75 students, including students of The Benjamin School, Riverside Theatre's dance education program, and 3rd Graders from Sebastian Elementary School, Indian River County's own Elementary School For The Arts.

7th Annual Show at First Pres with
a Just-Announced Surprise Guest
| |
Classic auto enthusiasts are welcome to enjoy the 7th Annual Car, Truck, and Motorcycle show on Saturday, November 5, 2022, from 10:00am to 3:00pm at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach. The event will be held in the parking lot of the church at 520 Royal Palm Boulevard. Admission is free; a suggested donation of $5.00 to benefit the FPC Men’s Charity Fund will be gladly accepted. Advance registration for show vehicles is $15, or $20 on-site the day of the show beginning at 9:00am.
Dr. Jacob Craig, Director of Music and Arts at First Presbyterian, enjoys building custom bikes and refurbishing classic trucks, had a great idea seven years ago to hold a car show. He teamed up with Volkswagen Beetle collectors, car show enthusiasts, and church members Glenn and Kim Conn. Together, the three organized an impromptu show featuring twenty cars and motorcycles owned by church members and friends, held on Father’s Day in 2015. The success of the first show has led it to become an annual event featuring an increasing number of participants each year. The 6th Annual Car, Truck, & Motorcycle Show was held on Saturday, November 6th, 2021. With forty-four cars in attendance, food trucks, a DJ and more, it was a great success with beautiful weather, too! The Presbyterian Men were able to raise $1,025.00, thanks to vehicle entry fees and donations from visitors. Proceeds from the show benefit the Presbyterian Men’s Charity fund, supporting many local groups and organizations such as Space Coast Honor Flight, Missionary Flights International, Florida Sherriff’s Youth Ranch, Salt of the Earth Ministries, Camp Haven, as well as needy families in Indian River county.
Advance vehicle registration is $15. On-site registration is $20 and will take place from 9 to 11am. Registration forms can be found on the church website, firstpresvero.org/events, or can be picked up in the church office.

(Rescheduled from October 29)
Camille Claudel 1915
Nov. 5, 6:00 p.m.
This film explores the life of Auguste Rodin’s protégé (and later mistress), Camille Claudel, as she struggles to find her identity as an artist and becomes confined to an asylum in the South of France by her family, where she will never sculpt again. Inspired by letters between Claudel and her brother, poet Paul Claudel, the story of Camille Claudel's 29-year confinement is in itself a tale of defiance against social norms - and a testament to the power of creativity and fortitude.
Registration is required, and space is limited. The film screening and Q&A will be held in the Polk Museum of Art's Auditorium.

ARMORY ART CENTER’S EXHIBITIONS HIGHLIGHT WEARABLE ART AND CANCER SURVIVORS
Contemporary art jewelry and reimagined radiotherapy masks celebrate the art of
perspective and perseverance in two recently opened exhibitions, “Verdant Bodies: A Contemporary Art Jewelry Exhibition” and “Radiant Nation: Masks”.
“Verdant Bodies” will be on display in the Armory’s Montgomery Hall through Friday, Nov. 18. This exhibition offers insight into how makers in the art jewelry and metalsmithing fields interpret their environments. “Verdant Bodies” will explore topics such as ecology, evolution, species relationships, botanical, and cultural implications. The exhibition is organized by Alicia Jane Boswell, director of the Armory’s jewelry department and Maria Camera-Smith, resident artist. It is juried by contemporary jewelry artist, Diane Falkenhagen. The Armory invites the public to enjoy a free opening reception for the show on Friday, Oct. 28 (5 to 7 p.m.).
“Radiant Nation” will be on display in the East Gallery from Friday, Nov. 4 through Friday, Dec. 16. The show features a collection of reimagined radiotherapy masks transformed by artists into vibrant, powerful forms of expression. This exhibition is inspired by artist and cancer survivor David Charlowe. In 2019, after surviving a bout with cancer, Charlowe asked several artists to repurpose nearly two dozen radiation masks.
Cancer patients use the masks to receive radiation treatment around the head and neck area. By utilizing different mixed media techniques, the artists imagine unique, thoughtful concepts and attitudes to depict life changing events. Each repurposed artist mask symbolizes the fortitude needed to survive radiation and cancer treatments. The exhibition is sponsored in part by the nonprofit, Sari Center for Integrative Cancer Care.
