District Awarded STEM BEST Grant
The Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council  has awarded STE M BEST  programs  since 2014 with an opportunity to grow a series  of community collaborations involving school+business partnerships.  STEM BEST (Businesses Engaging Students and Teachers) focuses on teachers and industry professionals working side-by-side to craft curriculum and projects that prepare students for exciting STEM careers local to their community in manufacturing, information technology, bioscience (agriculture and medicine), finance and more.

Among the 2017 STEM BEST partners is  Cedar Falls Community Schools in the Northeast STEM Region. Cedar Falls is further developing a CAPS program in Engineering Technology, Communication and Design, and Education. The community partnerships will involve students working on projects that fulfill needs for businesses, job shadowing opportunities, access to resources and equipment for students and fresh, creative minds for businesses. The financial model includes $278,045 from in-kind, partnership, Cedar Falls CSD, and other grants for classroom spaces, equipment, contracts, and personnel, while the STEM BEST Grant would be used for contracts and some equipment costs.

Mile Club
Elementary schools use Mile Club to encourage
students to sta y activ e dur ing school  and outside of school. For the last five years Brian Cross, PE teacher, has promoted community sponsored running events as a means to promote fitness and community involvement. This last Saturday, two students from Lincoln Elementary (Tyler and Kyle) participated in the Grant Wheeler 5K with the PE teacher. Both boys performed very well with an impressive time, out performing the PE teacher! One student (Kyle), medaled in his age bracket.

Congratulations to both runners and everyone who has helped make events like these possible for Cedar Falls students the last five years! And thank you Mr. Cross for being so dedicated to our students!

Providing Opportunities For Our Students
The CF Schools Foundation recently received a $1,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation, thanks to Cedar Falls Walmart manager Bob Brokaw and personnel manager Paula Tegtmeier.

Both Bob and Paula have children that attended Cedar Falls schools, and both are committed to continuing and expanding the successful educational experiences available to our students. Their generous grant will be used for classroom equipment and supplies for teacher and student projects.

Thank you Bob and Paula! Your gift is an outstanding example of your partnership and commitment to education and to our students.
