MAKERSPACE NEWS
Last week was abuzz with Makerspace excitement. The enthusiasm of all the community members who came to the sneak preview of the Redwood City Public Library Makerspace last night was palpable. The Library staff and the Redwood City Library Foundation team outdid themselves with the event. There were tours of the space, demos (3D printer, laser cutter, sewing machines), food and drink, crafts for kids, and so much more. And although a blown diode kept the Tesla coil demonstration brief, it was truly awesome while it lasted – thank you to our friends at Endiatx for bringing this impressive marvel of science!

We cannot wait for the Makerspace to open in January so that the community can make, create and innovate in this inspirational space. There is still time to donate needed equipment to the Makerspace and you can do so here.

HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS AROUND YOU
It's December, a month with many holiday celebrations around the world. RCPL joins the celebrations with a multicultural display in the Downtown Library Family Place. Our displays feature information sheets, activities, recipes and books that highlight many special winter traditions of worldwide cultures. The holidays we are featuring are: Hanukkah, Tió de Nadal, Santa Lucia, Las Posadas, Noche de los Rábanos, Dōngzhì, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Ōmisoka. Stop by to learn more about your neighbors and their winter holidays. We also have a children's book reading list, which you can see here.
WINTER READING CLUB IS HERE
We had so much fun at the Hometown Holidays event passing out Winter Reading Club goodies! If you'd like to join in the reading fun, drop by any RCPL location to pick up your reading log and a free book. All you need to do is read or listen to 5 books between December 1 and January 9 and write a one-word review for each title. Starting December 12, you can return your reading log to any Library. Finishers Ages 12 and under receive a goody bag and teens receive a second free book.

NEWS FROM THE FRIENDS
Friends of the Redwood City Public Library is very excited to announce its Honey Cookbook. Download your copy here.

The cookbook is created by Ruby Rappoport, a Friends of the Redwood City Public Library teenage Board member. She is a Sequoia High School freshman who has been volunteering with Friends since August of 2020 and joined the Board in January 2021. During one of the Board meetings, she proposed to create a cookbook composed of recipes that involve honey. All through 2021, she conducted outreach to the community to gather recipes with honey as an ingredient and constructed the book.

The cookbook celebrates our Library’s honey bees. Since 2018, we have sold over 1400 jars of honey – thank you bees! As with all funds raised by Friends, the money supports our Library’s programs.

Many thanks to Ruby for her wonderful idea and very hard work. And a huge thank you to each person who contributed a recipe. Enjoy!
