Relearning Public Health Lessons

One of the most frustrating patterns for those in public health is watching us having to relearn old lessons.

A policy gets removed in the name of flexibility or freedom. Then, the problem the policy was designed to prevent comes back. So the policy returns. We saw this last week with New World screwworm. This is just another example.

There was a reason military recruits have been required to get flu shots since the 1950s. Crowded living conditions and respiratory viruses are a predictable combination for disease spread. We need to remember that there are reasons we do certain things. We’re going to continue moving backward before going forward again until we learn that. More from Dr. Jetelina.
