FEBRUARY VIRTUAL PROGRAMS

There's a lot to love at the Virginia Discovery Museum this February with new virtual programs for children 2 to 10, but time is running out to join the fun! Check out our upcoming Chess Mates, Tot Box, STEAM Series, and Discovery Workshops below, and visit our website for a full lineup of our free Drop-In programs throughout the month. Registration ends soon for several programs, so sign up today!
The benefits extension for annual members expired on Dec. 31, 2020. Families who wish to take advantage of the 15 percent annual member discount are asked to purchase and start a new annual membership at vadm.org/memberships.

Fridays (Jan. 29 - Feb. 26) | 5 Classes | Ages 6+

Chess Mates is suitable for players ages 6 and older of all skill levels. The class is led by special guest instructor Aaron Osborne, the current No. 1 Class C player in Virginia, and students will be divided into one of three 1-hour Zoom sessions (3:00-4:00 p.m., 4:00-5:00 p.m., 5:00-6:00 p.m.) based on age and skill level. Beginners will have the opportunity to work on basic mechanics and gameplay while more experienced players work on skills development. Students will have the opportunity to play against others participating in their same time slot using the free Lichess platform. The instructor will follow up with all registrants ahead of the first class with session rosters.

Wednesdays (Feb. 10-24) | 10:30-11:00 a.m. | Ages 2-4
Register By: Jan. 28 at Noon
Join Ms. Megan, a certified children's librarian and education programming specialist, on Wednesday mornings as we combine weekly virtual interaction with a monthly curated box of fun, age-appropriate art, play, and learning supplies and instructions. During February's three playdates, we'll read books, play games, make art, and sing songs. Plus, your Tot Box will include daily activities to try on your own at home throughout the month: Enjoy tactile exploratory play with a fruity cereal sensory bin, experiment with flight as you build and pilot a hoop glider, explore sound with a DIY harmonica, engage in pretend play as you decorate a frog puppet and put on a show, create a Valentine for someone you love, and more.

There's a lot to love at the Museum this February, and Miss Frankie has some sweet surprises in store, just in time for Valentine's Day! Fall in love with STEAM across four Fridays as we explore the science of the season, throw a hearty holiday party, create charming candy creatures, and celebrate our body's powerful pumper -- the heart. Kids will bottle their own "love potion" density jar, mold and shape fabulously fun flubber, code a secret heartfelt message, build a pumping model heart, and much more.

In her search for the perfect Valentine's Day card, Miss Frankie accidentally awoke a sleeping swarm of love bugs! Now, the mischievous little pixies are making a mess of her workshop. Help her capture the chaotic critters by using imagination to transform them into sweet, squishy symbols of affection to share with friends and family, then use their leftover magic to create your own special Valentine's Day card, fingerprint heart canvas, and more.

A splash of color! A dash of razzmatazz! Miss Frankie has party fever, and you're invited to pop into her workshop to discover the Mardi Gras Magic! Design a dazzling mask and Twizzler necklace, build a brilliant box parade float, and create colorful Mason jar lid streamers as we learn about this vibrant holiday celebrated around the world.

Looks like that chubby cherub's arrow has struck true again! Miss Frankie was looking for a way to share her love of art and science and found a perfect match for her next hands-on STEAM exploration: Valentine's Day! Celebrate this sweet season as we create cute Cupid tube puppets, springy heart catapults, heart spinners, and more.
