Our Sixth Pride Parade Is THIS Sunday!

This joy-filled event moves to downtown St. Louis for the first time this year, and we are moving right along with it!  Bring your spouses, partners, friends, children, and grandchildren and join us as we carry our banner and signs in support of LGBT rights at the annual Pride Parade this Sunday at 11:00 am.

Those interested in joining us should email Mary O'Reilly for details on when and where to meet, what to wear, and parking/Metrolink information.

Author Cheryl Strayed describes her Pride Parade experience as "an explosion of love that is rooted in hate."  Read Strayed's moving account HERE.

Common-Sense Campaign Plans Next Steps

Many thanks to everyone who contributed money, time, ideas, and energy to the launch of our Campaign for Common-Sense Gun Solutions.  Committee members are now planning for the second phase of the campaign, which will be an effort to get mayors in the 90+ communities in St. Louis to sign on to and support Mayors Against Illegal Guns.  A strategic campaign is being mapped out under the direction of Lise Bernstein and Ruth Ehresman, who have agreed to chair this portion of our effort.

If you are sick and tired of gun violence and you would like to make a difference in St. Louis, please join with us.  Barbara Finch is chairing this committee; contact her at: [email protected].

Still a Few More Days to Do This!

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has until July 14 to veto what is absolutely the worst gun bill in the nation:  HB 436 would nullify all federal gun bills in Missouri and criminalize law enforcement officers who would try to enforce them.  It would allow for the open carry of guns 16 inches or smaller and lower the age for conceal/carry to 19.  It would allow armed "school protection officers" in  our schools.

Parts of this bill are clearly unconstitutional; all of the provisions are clearly dangerous.  Please call Governor Nixon at 573-751-3222 and ask him to veto this bill.

(NOTE: Why not keep the Governor's phone number handy
and add to your contact list in your phone!)

EUREKA!

When a "listening tour" became a "private reception," Women's Voices President Mary Clemons and a nun crashed the party.

Read about their meeting with House Speaker Tim Jones at his Eureka office concerning the refusal of the Missouri legislature to fund Medicaid expansion.

Welcome to Our Youngest Member!

Welcome to Izzy Bascom-Anderson, who took advantage of Women's Voices $10 student membership and joined us in June!  Izzy is a ninth-grader at John Burroughs and is interested in raising awareness of feminism; she is also looking for someone who might be willing to sponsor a teen group.  We look forward to having Izzy, plus some of her friends, join us at meetings in the fall!
