Louisiana: Shreveport considers lifting smoking ban for casinos

Shreveport is revisiting the smoke-free workplace ordinance as councilmembers consider allowing smoking in casinos. Shreveport became the 30th city in Louisiana to pass a smoke-free ordinance for all workplaces in 2020. Councilmembers have introduced a resolution that would make one change to the ordinance. “Two years ago, I stood at this same podium and I said these words,” said Ashley Hebert, Center for Black Health and Equity. “The casino is not here for the community, but you are.”

Michigan tribe still hoping for approval of casino near Muskegon

Backers of a proposed $180 million casino near Muskegon are hopeful there’s still a chance for gubernatorial approval of their plans, though that likely won’t come for at least another six months. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s approval is needed for the casino proposed by the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians. She declined to give that approval last year, though she indicated she’d reconsider pending the outcome of another tribe’s quest for federal recognition. The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs has issued a proposed decision denying recognition for that tribe.

As legalized gambling becomes pervasive, NCAA rules against it remain strict with tough penalties

The NCAA consequences could be far worse than the legal ones. While the penalty for betting on sporting events in the state of Iowa for individuals under the age of 21 is a fine of $645, a college athlete could be sidelined for most of a season because of NCAA rules. Five years since a Supreme Court decision paved the way for states to legalize betting on sporting events, more than half have done so.

City of Chicago releases new renderings showing ‘evolved’ Bally’s casino design

The design of the planned Bally’s River North casino and hotel complex has undergone a significant makeover that replaces much of the original scheme’s Vegas-like glitz with a more sober look. Department of Planning Commissioner Maurice Cox said the new “evolved” design is the result of months of biweekly meetings with casino officials, stakeholders and others. He said the result is “a better product.” The new renderings — first obtained by the Sun-Times — were expected to be made public later Thursday.

Anaxi announces partnership with Penn to deliver content to North American markets

Geolocation company Incognia enters online gambling market

Incognia, a location identity company, has announced entering the online gambling industry by offering geolocation and account security services. The California-based company believes its technology will help gaming operators detect attempts at bettors placing bets outside of state lines, as well as a variety of other attempts to cheat state-level gaming.

Paysafe launches upgraded Skrill digital wallet for Ontario market

A major objective for operators in Ontario’s regulated internet-gaming market when it comes to customer retention will come down to seamlessness, simplicity, and security of betting transactions. Payments-platform Paysafe hopes they have a solution for that, announcing they’ve launched their revamped Skrill digital wallet for online betting in Ontario.

Sports betting in Maryland yields $35.6M GGR in April, nearly all from mobile bets

Maryland Lottery and Gaming reported Wednesday that April brought operators more than $35.6 million in gross sports wagering revenue, with the bulk of it coming from FanDuel‘s mobile book. The U.S. industry leader claimed over $21.2 million in gross revenue, making it 5-for-5 surpassing $20 million in full months of mobile wagering in the Old Line State.

‘You forget you’re in Danville:’ Councilman highlights upcoming Caesars Virginia opening

Caesars Virginia will open a temporary casino starting Monday, May 15. After a soft opening on Tuesday, with another scheduled for Thursday, Caesars told ABC13 they’re doing these trial runs to make sure they’re ready for the big day. City Council Member Lee Vogler was at the soft opening on Tuesday.

Nebraska’s first sportsbook, at WarHorse Casino Lincoln, will be operated by Kambi

The Kambi Group has partnered with Nebraska casino operator WarHorse Gaming to operate the casino’s first sportsbook. WarHorse Gaming is a division of Ho-Chunk Inc. and a commercial entity regulated by the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission (NRGC). The long-term deal will see WarHorse WarHorse open the first sportsbook in Nebraska with the debut of WarHorse Casino Lincoln.

City of Dreams integrated casino-resort, Europe’s first, to open in Cyprus in July

Europe’s first integrated casino resort will be opening in Cyprus on July 10 this year, Melco Resort announced on Thursday.Described as a game changing development, the resort is “poised to revolutionise the island’s tourism and hospitality sectors,” the company said. The doors for City of Dreams Mediterranean in Zakaki “will bring Melco’s award-wining standards of entertainment and leisure and welcome innovation to Cyprus’ luxury hotel scene,” the resort’s general manager Grant Johnson said.

Codere Online eyes 2024 positive cash flow after Q1 2023 revenue growth

Codere Online has reported revenue growth across its three core markets, with the increase in income enabling the Spanish markets-focused operator to further reduce its net losses. Group wide revenue for the first quarter of the year rose 57% to €37.6m (Q1 2022: €23.9m), whilst net gaming revenue increased 55% to €39.5m (€25.5m).

Rank Group Plc has promoted Interactive MD Jon Martin to the position of Group Chief Operating Officer (COO), confirming that he will assume the role during the summer. A five-year executive of Rank, Martin has led multiple divisions of the LSE gambling group including its Aspers Online brand and International operations.

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, the keynote speaker at the annual Global Gaming Expo (G2E) in Las Vegas in 2019, used a compelling prop to make a compelling point to the audience. Christie noted that his 26-year-old investment banker son “doesn’t have this,” as he took out a well-stocked money clip. The point was that while his son has disposable income, he doesn’t carry cash with him. That led to his being disappointed, for example, when—after receiving his car from a valet after a wedding reception—he was unable to offer a tip because the valet did not have a Venmo account.
