Louisiana: Shreveport considers lifting smoking ban for casinos
Shreveport is revisiting the smoke-free workplace ordinance as councilmembers consider allowing smoking in casinos. Shreveport became the 30th city in Louisiana to pass a smoke-free ordinance for all workplaces in 2020. Councilmembers have introduced a resolution that would make one change to the ordinance. “Two years ago, I stood at this same podium and I said these words,” said Ashley Hebert, Center for Black Health and Equity. “The casino is not here for the community, but you are.”

Michigan tribe still hoping for approval of casino near Muskegon
Backers of a proposed $180 million casino near Muskegon are hopeful there’s still a chance for gubernatorial approval of their plans, though that likely won’t come for at least another six months. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s approval is needed for the casino proposed by the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians. She declined to give that approval last year, though she indicated she’d reconsider pending the outcome of another tribe’s quest for federal recognition. The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs has issued a proposed decision denying recognition for that tribe.

City of Chicago releases new renderings showing ‘evolved’ Bally’s casino design
The design of the planned Bally’s River North casino and hotel complex has undergone a significant makeover that replaces much of the original scheme’s Vegas-like glitz with a more sober look. Department of Planning Commissioner Maurice Cox said the new “evolved” design is the result of months of biweekly meetings with casino officials, stakeholders and others. He said the result is “a better product.” The new renderings — first obtained by the Sun-Times — were expected to be made public later Thursday.

Geolocation company Incognia enters online gambling market
Incognia, a location identity company, has announced entering the online gambling industry by offering geolocation and account security services. The California-based company believes its technology will help gaming operators detect attempts at bettors placing bets outside of state lines, as well as a variety of other attempts to cheat state-level gaming.

City of Dreams integrated casino-resort, Europe’s first, to open in Cyprus in July
Europe’s first integrated casino resort will be opening in Cyprus on July 10 this year, Melco Resort announced on Thursday.Described as a game changing development, the resort is “poised to revolutionise the island’s tourism and hospitality sectors,” the company said. The doors for City of Dreams Mediterranean in Zakaki “will bring Melco’s award-wining standards of entertainment and leisure and welcome innovation to Cyprus’ luxury hotel scene,” the resort’s general manager Grant Johnson said.

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, the keynote speaker at the annual Global Gaming Expo (G2E) in Las Vegas in 2019, used a compelling prop to make a compelling point to the audience. Christie noted that his 26-year-old investment banker son “doesn’t have this,” as he took out a well-stocked money clip. The point was that while his son has disposable income, he doesn’t carry cash with him. That led to his being disappointed, for example, when—after receiving his car from a valet after a wedding reception—he was unable to offer a tip because the valet did not have a Venmo account.
