News from Principal Young

Dear OLOL families,

I have had several parents, parishioners, and friends over the past several weeks ask how the start of school has been. For the most part I feel it has been great. Some individuals have shared comments last week that make me extremely proud of our school and our students. You too should be extremely proud that your children attend OLOL.

Academics are extremely important to me and I have the great responsibility of ensuring that I do everything possible to give our students and families a world class education. I am extremely proud that some areas of our school give our students a huge competitive advantage in high school and college. Being at OLOL for over 10 years I am blessed to see the impact that it makes in our graduates' adult life. We are blessed that this opportunity is available to our families and students and they take advantage of it.

The comments that I heard were not about academic, but were about how we work on shaping the spiritual learning of our students and how they conduct themselves to others.

A family shared with me a conversation they had after the first day of school. The student shared that during classroom prayer, three students said that they were praying for this student on their first day at OLOL.

We welcomed a substitute teacher last week that had never been at OLOL before. He made a point to come to me and said what a wonderful experience it was and how gracious and helpful our students were. This teacher taught across grade levels so it just wasn’t one class. He said that he has subbed in public and Catholic schools over the last 2 years and never experienced a school atmosphere like ours.

Finally, work has begun on updating our security system (more on that next week). One of the individuals that was working on getting cables set for our doors and cameras shared that he has worked in a lot of schools and has never seen kids like ours before. They greeted him and said thank you. He said it was strange to hear because it never happens.

The Gospel of Matthew states that the commandment to love your neighbor as yourself is very similar and is as important as the commandment to love your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. Our students are shining examples of applying this commandment in real world experiences. They care about their classmates as much as themselves. They care about strangers and want them to be comfortable in our school

Like areas of our academics, this is not found at every school. I tend to believe it is something special that OLOL has that can’t be replicated elsewhere. It is this way because of our students, families, staff, Fr. Jim, and parish staff.

These comments last week gave me a huge boost of energy and increased self-esteem. I hope that our students, families, and staff feel the same way as I.

“You are obligated to love your neighbor as yourself, and loving him,you ought to help him spiritually, with prayer, counseling him with words, assisting him both spiritually and temporally, according to the need in which he may be, at least with your goodwill if you have nothing else” - St Catherine of Siena

Lectio Divina

We pray with all Catholics throughout the Green Bay Diocese

Dear OLOL Families,

One of the goals of Bishop Ricken and all GRACE schools this year is for parishioners, staff, students, and families to practice Lectio Divina.  Lectio Divina is a process that assists us in finding a deeper meaning of scripture.  I believe a deeper understanding of God’s word will help us navigate all issues big and small that we face each day.

I will conclude with a few notes about Lectio Divina.

  • When you reflect, that can be through prayer, journaling, or quiet reflection
  • This can be done individually or as a family.
  • We will be practicing this with students throughout the year.   It will look different at the different grade levels.  The occurrence of when we do Lectio Divina will also be different at the grade levels.
  • Each week in the Lourdes Letter we will include the steps of Lectio Divina along with Sunday’s Gospel scripture.  My wife and I have been practicing Lectio Divina for almost a year now.  We have found that we get more out of week-end Mass when we reflect on the readings beforehand.
  • If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.  It has really impacted my relationship with Christ and my relationships with others in a positive way.

Mr. Jeffrey Young

There are different ways to engage in Lectio Divina.  If you are a beginner here is a process that will help you get started:  For scripture, I would suggest reading the upcoming Sunday Gospel scripture.

Step 1: Prepare yourself to read scripture.  You will need to find a time and location where you will not be interrupted or disturbed.  Ready yourself to read God’s word and see how He wants you to respond.

Step 2: Read the scripture and look for words or phrases that jump out at you.

Step 3: Reflect on those words or phrases and what they mean to you.

Step 4: Reread the scripture and spend a few moments in quiet reflection on what God is calling you to do through these words or phrases.

Step 5: Reread the scripture a third time and it is time to respond.  What actions will you take after your conversation with God?

Matthew 18:21-35

Daily Readings from USCCB

Peter approached Jesus and asked him,

"Lord, if my brother sins against me,

how often must I forgive?

As many as seven times?"

Jesus answered, "I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.

That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king

who decided to settle accounts with his servants.

When he began the accounting,

a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount.

Since he had no way of paying it back,

his master ordered him to be sold,

along with his wife, his children, and all his property,

in payment of the debt.

At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said,

'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full.'

Moved with compassion the master of that servant

let him go and forgave him the loan

When that servant had left, he found one of his fellow servants

who owed him a much smaller amount.

He seized him and started to choke him, demanding,

'Pay back what you owe.'

Falling to his knees, his fellow servant begged him,

'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.'

But he refused.

Instead, he had the fellow servant put in prison

until he paid back the debt.

Now when his fellow servants saw what had happened,

they were deeply disturbed, and went to their master

and reported the whole affair.

His master summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant!

I forgave you your entire debt because you begged me to.

Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant,

as I had pity on you?'

Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers

until he should pay back the whole debt.

So will my heavenly Father do to you,

unless each of you forgives your brother from your heart."

STAR Assessments are short tests that provide teachers with personalized learning data for each student. Students may take a STAR test for early literacy, math, or reading. Teachers analyze the data they receive from STAR Assessments to learn what students already know and what they are ready to learn next, to monitor student growth, and to determine which students may need additional help. These tests are research-based and scientifically proven to help teachers guide each student on their unique path to proficiency.
