A Word from the Pastor

February 21, 2025

I will be away from the parish for a little more than a week. I leave on Sunday morning February 23 and return on Tuesday March 4. I am going to the Philippines to participate in the ordination of a new Eudist priest, Fr. Errol Salcedo, CJM. He will be ordained on March 1. I will preach at his first Mass on March 2.

Errol was my student at Maryhill School of Theology. I was also his advisor for his Masters thesis. After he had further contact with other Eudists, he asked to join our Congregation. I was the director of formation when he entered our community. After my departure from the Philippines, I became his spiritual director as we met monthly via Zoom or Messenger. I am delighted to be present for his ordination.

As you may know, the formation of priests was one of the reasons that St. John Eudes founded the Congregation of Jesus and Mary. In 2005, Bishop (now Cardinal) Luis Antonio Tagle invited the Eudists to come to the Philippines to assist in the formation of priests and lay leaders. I was part of the first team that went there, and I remained in the Philippines for 12 years. As our presence in the Philippines expanded, I was in charge of the formation of the Eudist seminarians. We now have 8 Eudist priests in the Philippines. I also taught theology at Divine Word Seminary and Loyola School of Theology.

The formation of priests is of paramount importance for the vitality of the Church. It ensures that priests are not only well-prepared to fulfill their roles as spiritual leaders but also equipped to inspire and guide the People of God in their journey toward holiness. The integration of spiritual, intellectual, pastoral and human formation is essential for cultivating priests who can authentically represent Christ and effectively serve the needs of the Church and the world.

I invite you to pray for more vocations to the priesthood. I encourage you to invite young men that you may know to consider this vocation. I also invite you to pray for Fr. Errol as he begins his life as an ordained priest. May God’s grace guide him as he embarks on his service to Christ and His Church as a Eudist priest.

Thank you also for your prayers for me as I make this long journey. See you upon my return.

In one Heart,

Fr. Ron

What is a Jubilee Year?

Pope Francis has declared the year 2025 to be a Jubilee Year. This article by Gerard O’Connell explains the history and meaning behind this centuries-old tradition. One way of observing the Jubilee is to go on a pilgrimage to Rome.

The full calendar of events and all relevant information for pilgrims to Rome can be found on the Vatican’s Jubilee website, including how to get a free digital pass that will be needed to take part in the main Jubilee events: www.iubilaeum2025.va/en/contatti.html

Gospel Reading

Luke 6:27-38

Jesus teaches his disciples to be merciful as God is merciful.

Background on the Gospel Reading

Today's gospel reading is a continuation of the teaching that began in last Sunday's gospel. We continue to hear Jesus' Sermon on the Plain. Recall that in Luke's Gospel, this teaching is addressed to Jesus' disciples. This is in contrast to the parallel found in Matthew's Gospel, the Sermon on the Mount, in which Jesus' words are addressed to both the disciples and to the crowds.

These words from Jesus' teaching are familiar to us. They constitute the crux and the challenge of what it means to be a disciple: Love your enemies, turn the other cheek, give to those who ask, do unto others, lend without expecting repayment, judge not lest you be judged.

There are several similarities between Luke's and Matthew's report of Jesus' great teaching. Both begin with the Beatitudes. Matthew includes nearly all the content that Luke does; the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew's Gospel is longer than Luke's Sermon on the Plain. There are, however, differences in language and nuance. For example, Matthew presents this portion of the teaching as a contrast between Jesus' teaching and the teachings of the law and the prophets. This is in keeping with Matthew's concern to address his predominantly Jewish audience. It is likely that Luke omits this contrast because it was unnecessary for the Gentile believers for whom Luke is writing.

Another point of contrast between Matthew and Luke's presentation is the terminology. In Luke, Jesus contrasts the behavior of his followers with the behavior of “sinners.” In Matthew, Jesus contrasts the behavior desired with the behavior of tax collectors and Gentiles. Matthew concludes the teaching about love of enemies with the admonition to be perfect as God is perfect; Luke concludes by emphasizing God's mercy.

In both Gospels, Jesus' words challenge those who would follow him to be more like God. God loves us beyond our expectations, beyond anything we can possibly imagine. In response to God's love, we are to love as God loves, beyond expectations and with a depth beyond imagining.

Feliz Domingo.
