As the world enters a second pandemic year, some of us are encouraged by the promise of a vaccine. Others get their proverbial shot in the arm a different way.
Outside Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, Sisonke Boys Club Mentor Nyika Muyambo took a long look at what he and fellow Mentor Prosper Siphambili accomplished in 2020, a year marked by fear, confusion and isolation. What he concluded could surprise you.
Please watch Nyika’s video chat (below) with other GSGC Mentors earlier this month or read the summary,
Every Challenge Contains the Seeds of Opportunity. Learn about the Mentors’ decision to go with
hope, community and compassion. Instead of giving in to despair, Nyika and Prosper led with love for club members and village residents, and the results are stunning.
But that’s exactly the type of local leader we partner with and you support.
In Northern Zambia, Mentor Thoko is overseeing a short play for the community about educating girls, called “We need to address this issue” and Mentor Prisca goes door to door to check on girls when rules prevent group gatherings. In Madagascar, Mentor Cleo launched a podcast series explaining her club’s female empowerment programs. Outside Victoria Falls, Mentor Sfe nominated a girl for the prestigious Women Rise and Excel Leadership and Skills Development Training — and she was accepted. In rural Zimbabwe, Tikobane Mentors organized a reading challenge to keep young people focused on improving their English. In rural Zambia, Mentor Pestrida climbs a cell tower for connectivity to us. And in Livingstone, Wayi Wayi youth nurtured fruit tree saplings, and Mentor Gloria put current club members together with older alumnae who shared their life experiences.
Every day, our Mentors live their beliefs and hopes. They are steadfast role models for their club members and changemakers in their communities. That’s why they are our partners – they are smart, creative and dedicated.
Their work can only happen because of you. Thank you for your continued donations, which these days are keeping Mentors, youth and families fed, thinking outside the box, and staying positive.
