Love and Sex and STIs

PrEP for women? Yes! PrEP for pregnant people? Yes!

STIs increase the risk for HIV- Including chlamydia, gonorrhea and trichomoniasis. When a client is STI + are you testing for HIV?

According to Dr. Dominika Seidman, OB/GYN at UCSF Health: "PrEP should become a regular part of the health conversation, associated with the broad group of folks, not just risk behavior. It's about sexual health and protecting yourself. No assumptions. Non-judgmental conversation".

Women, particularly BIPOC women, are UNDER prescribed PrEP. In 2018 only 7% of women who may have benefited from PrEP were prescribed!

Lack of knowledge and awareness, HIV stigma, provider bias, cost, access, lack of perceived risk- all impact the conversation.

Many of the materials for PrEP education are geared towards gay and bi men. There may be a low perceived risk for cis women. There may be cultural stigma around sex and HIV.

The recommended regimens should be used primarily; alternative regimens can be considered in instances of substantial drug allergy or other contraindications.

Complete guidelines can be found online at: www.cdc.gov/std/treatment.
