DSI Announces Special Facade Grant Program
Applications Due June 30
|
|
Downtown Shenandoah, Inc (DSI) recently announced a Special Facade Improvement Grant Program.
Thanks to funding received from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, this grant is dedicated to improving storefronts and curb appeal along the Shenandoah Main Street Business District.
Applications will be accepted for any commercial property within the designated boundaries of the Main Street Business district defined as Main Street between Washington Street south to Laurel Street, and Centre Street between Jardin Street east to White Street. DSI will accept applications through June 30, 2021.
Facade guidelines are established to encourage commercial property owners and businesses to restore the outside appearance of their building while maintaining the building's historical and architectural character. "Improving storefronts and curb appeal will attract more visitors and foot traffic to our area," said Susan Williams of DSI.
"Shenandoah is the home of Mrs. T's Pierogies, famous for their kielbasi shops, has wonderful restaurants, unique retail establishments, professional/medical services, and is part of the state's WalkWorks Program. Shenandoah is also the future site of The Center for Education, Business and The Arts (CEBA) that will begin construction in 2022."
All facade applications must be approved by the DSI Board of Directors and the Shenandoah Borough Management.
No applications will be approved if any Shenandoah Code or ordinance violations exist."A set of guidelines are available for Shenandoah businesses to review," explained Williams. "This grant is extremely generous but in order to receive funding, a detailed overview of the project must be submitted and approved before any work is started on the facade.
She continued to explain that when the project is completed, all receipts and the contractor's itemized invoice must be submitted before the grant is awarded. DSI will pay the contractor 90 percent up to $9,000 for a front facade and 90 percent up to $18,000 for a corner facade.
"DSI is committed to revitalizing Shenandoah and Schuylkill County. This Special Facade program is part of our continuing efforts to work collaboratively with state and local government officials and community members to improve the economic landscape in our area, said Williams.

Help Us Create a Bright New Future For Our Community
|
|
The Center For Education, Business and the Arts (CEBA) is very close to becoming a reality! This innovation center will become a community hub where all people of all walks of life, ages, and backgrounds can gather, share ideas and learn and grow together.
Take a Look How Far We've Come
- Thanks to a generous grant from the Regional Housing Legal Services, we are working with Chris Gulotta of the Gulotta Group to assist us in obtaining financing and processing grant and loan applications
- We have received a $1.5 RACP state grant that requires a dollar to dollar match. An ongoing capital campaign continues for the match and to raise match funding and for commitments that are not covered by state grants.
- Murphy Dittenhafer is the architect selected for the building's layout and design
- Multiple letters of intent and letters of support from area business leaders, organizations, government officials, and community members who support CEBA are arriving daily
- DSI is accepting requests for naming rights for rooms within CEBA
- DSI is accepting requests for naming bricks for the CEBA building
- Everyone who donates will have their name included on a Giving Tree located in the building's lobby
- DSI plans to start CEBA construction in early 2022
CEBA’s collaborative environment will enable individuals to grow their business ideas to a point where they can open their own storefronts, thereby helping to revitalize the community, fill empty storefronts, and create new jobs.
We're making headway every day. Be a part of history and please donate today. Every dollar counts...your dollar counts.

Business Spotlight: The Lyric Restaurant
|
|
|
|
"If I can put a smile on someone's face, it's a good day! "Ruth Williams, owner, Lyric Restaurant
|
|
|
|
Shenandoah, PA is home to many historical buildings that are landmarks in the community. The Lyric Restaurant and Bar, formerly the Lyric Theatre located at the corner of Jardin St. and Centre St. is a local icon. Opened in 1913, It accommodated 480 people who enjoyed live performances. As a matter of fact, there is an original booth in the restaurant dedicated to Hollywood legends, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall who spent time there.
Today, The Lyric is a family-friendly restaurant with new owners who want to continue to celebrate and honor the history of the building. When you walk through the door, it’s like walking back in time. There are old photographs and records lining the walls providing a warm, nostalgic welcome.
“The Lyric building is a beautiful piece of history and we hope to continue honoring this history,” said owner, Ruth Williams. Our plan is to make the Lyric enjoyable and pleasant and for every patron to have a great experience. If I can make one person smile every day, it’s a good day,” she said.
Ruth and Dwight Williams and their two sons, Aiden and Jeffrey took a “leap of faith”. Right before the pandemic hit, they purchased the Lyric and relocated from Philadelphia to Shenandoah. Dwight who attended Schuylkill Valley School District still has family ties to Shenandoah. Through the years, during visits, they drove past the Lyric and Ruth fell in love with the building, especially the balcony. “Every time we turned the corner the balcony would put me into a daze,” she said. When I realized the Lyric was for sale, I knew I had to have it. "It was my husband who encouraged me and said that if anyone could do it, I could,” she said.
“It was hard at first because we left everything behind. It was like a whole new world. Coming from the big city to a small rural town, was a transition, especially during a pandemic.” But the family took it one day at a time and remained optimistic. “We are blessed to be where we are,” said Ruth. “I always tell my kids to never limit yourselves. God has put us here for a reason even if we don’t understand why.”
Ruth explained that Lyric’s menu is family-friendly serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The selections range from appetizers to sandwiches to dinner entries. A few customer favorites are steaks served sizzling on the plate, their famous filet mignon sandwiches, and delicious crab cakes. The bar area is also a place to gather and enjoy spending time. Ruth explained that the Lyric is so much more than a restaurant. It is a building full of memories. While renovating she found treasures from the past that are now part of the décor.
”I found this old newspaper article on the floor," she said pointing to a framed picture hanging above the bar. It included a photo of the bar from years ago. One of our guests recognized a man in the photo as her grandfather. That one moment in time makes it extra special. Families that spent time here and share their stories with me put a sparkle in my heart,” she said.
Ruth is looking forward to serving the community. She wants to get more involved, meet more people and eventually start more businesses in Shenandoah. Her ambition, positive attitude, and work ethic is inspiring. “I have many ideas and want to do more in our new home, she smiled. “It’s not a job, it’s a lifestyle.”
Visit the Lyric Restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner during their special summer hours. Thursday 8 am - 8 pm, Friday and Saturday 8 am - 9 pm, and Sunday, 8 am - 8 pm. The Lyric Bar is open Thursday - Sunday, 3 pm - 2 am.
Ruth shared that The Lyric is hiring for a variety of positions. Follow them on Facebook or call: (570) 955-3820
