Lovejoy High School

A Message from the Principal

Lovejoy HS News 11 14 16

Parents and Guardians,

My introductory paragraph is much longer than usual but has important information about this week. Please take a couple of minutes to read through it completely.

I can't believe that next Thursday is Thanksgiving, and we only have four weeks of school until the end of the first semester. This year is moving quickly, and I hope you enjoy some time with your students during next week's break. As a reminder, students and staff will be on break from Monday, November 21st through Friday, November 25th. If there is something you will need during that week (VOE's - required paperwork for student driver permits, transcripts, etc...), please let us know this week so we can assist you.

Attending school is important academically for students, but because we are in the week before a holiday, I also want to remind you of the financial impact. School funding is directly tied to student attendance, and the school days immediately before and after a holiday are traditionally the days with the largest number of student absences. We recognize that there are important reasons that students are absent from school, but please continue to partner with us in keeping your students in school whenever possible.

As many of you already know, our Leopard Volleyball team has made it to the UIL State Tournament and will play their next game on Friday, November 18th at 1:00 p.m. at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland. Students who wish to attend the game can receive an excused absence by coming to school on Friday and waiting to check out until after 2nd period ends (10:35 a.m.) They will then need to turn in their ticket stub from the game (with their name written on the back) to our attendance office or the lobby receptionist when they return to school on Monday, November 28th. By waiting until after 10:35 a.m. to check out of school, it maximizes student time in class, provides them an opportunity to share in the State Championship experience, and allows them to be counted present for state attendance purposes.

Students will need to have a parent :
  • physically check them out of school OR
  • send an email with the date and time of release to [email protected]
with permission for their student to check themselves out
  • we encourage you to send the email by 9:00 am on Friday to help facilitate the dismissal process
I also want to give special congratulations to our LHS Cross Country team for their success this weekend at the UIL State Meet. Carson Hockersmith was our lone female runner and placed 66th overall, while our men's team finished 1st! Our athletic webpage has a great story with all the details from the meet and can be found at http://lovejoyathletics.com/2016/11/13/xc-state-champions/.

Go Leopards!

Revisiting Diversity:  More than a Buzzword:  November 17
You see it sprinkled in college catalogs, corporate mission statements, and in employee training seminars:  Diversity.  A New York Times piece recently made the claim that the ubiquitous word has all but lost its meaning.  This lecture, presented by Dr. Salena Brody, will revisit what diversity really means for our schools, workplaces, and communities, focusing on social science research from the past half century.

Thursday, November 17, 2016
6:00 - 7:30 PM
Lovejoy ISD Administration Building/Training Room

Dr. Salena Brody is a professor of Psychology at Collin College.  She earned her doctorate in Social Psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, studying intergroup contact and attitude change.  Her research focuses on identifying the conditions under which contact between groups leads to prejudice reduction and other positive outcomes.  She is a Phi Beta Kappa member and has received numerous teaching awards including being named the 2016-2017 Outstanding Professor of the Year at Collin College.  She is a proud Lovejoy parent and active member of the community, serving on the Friends of Fairview Fire Board of Directors.

Students Leaving Campus
In the event that students need to leave campus during the school day and they drive themselves to school, we will need you to send an email to [email protected] . Please include the student's name, the time they need to leave, the reason, and a phone number to be used to contact you. Once we have received the email, we will call you for verification, and the email will provide us with the needed documentation for our records.

Parking for Daytime Events
This is a reminder that we have changed our parking policy in regards to campus events that are scheduled during school hours. Due to the increase in the number of student-assigned parking spots in the back parking lot, we ask that parents park in the front, and we will have a sign-in table just inside the cafeteria.
