A Message from the Principal
April 12, 2021

Parents and Guardians,

I hope you and your student were able to enjoy the beautiful weather we had this weekend. The warm Sunday temperatures made for an enjoyable day outside and reminded me of why I look forward to April in North Texas.

I want to say a big "Thank You" to all the staff, parent, and students who participated in this past weekend's STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Festival. Even though the event was conducted virtually, there were fascinating presentations and opportunities to participate in on-line activities for students and adults who are interested in STEM. This is an annual event and we are proud of the experience it provides for our students and community.

The English I End Of Course (EOC) exam has been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 20th. This was the EOC exam that many districts had to cancel from April 6th when there were server issues at the state level. This test is primarily for 9th graders and will begin at approximately 8:45 a.m. in their assigned room. Exam room assignments will be posted in the Commons on the morning of the 20th, and all exams will be given on-campus. Students do not need to register for the exams.

As a reminder, Lovejoy ISD has learned from the Texas Education Agency that districts will be eligible for "Hold Harmless" state aid funding in the Spring Semester based on on-campus attendance participation rates during the last 6-weeks of school. We need your help to get our full funding. If your child is signed up for on-campus instruction learning during Q4, please make sure they are present every day on campus unless they are officially quarantined or are absent for other valid reasons such as illness, doctor's appointments, etc. When reviewing your student’s attendance in PowerSchool you will see the designation “PF” for Present Face-to-Face or “PS” for Present Synchronously (virtually).

Please take a few minutes to review the information below including our recognition portions that celebrate our students and programs.

Sincerely,

Chris Mayfield
Principal

If you would like your student's records to reflect that they have received their Covid vaccinations, please send proof of completed immunization to the nurse.

Upcoming Events
Love Yourself Week
Monday, April 12th - Friday, April 16th

The purpose of the week is to remind students of ways to have a positive mindset, thus resulting in positive mental health. Here are a few of the ideas to be covered during social emotional learning:

  • Happiness is a quality of life that can be practiced rather than a temporary emotion.
  • You never know when you will impact others positively (or yourself) by asking them, "Hi, how are you?"
  • While forgiving others is hard, it ultimately allows for personal happiness.
  • Mindfulness activities like yoga can help you feel more balanced and positive.
  • Developing greater respect and appreciation for people who are different contributes to a positive mindset.

In addition, the Student Council will contribute to the week.
Students will experience positivity by providing gratitude towards others in an interactive activity.
Messages will be posted above reflective material in the hallways to remind students of their beauty inside and out. Thank you to the PTSO for providing the materials.

PTO SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION AVAILABLE

The Parent-Teacher Organizations in the Lovejoy Independent School District each will award one $500 scholarship to a college-bound senior graduating from Lovejoy High School in 2021. This centralized application means that each student completes the application ONCE, but is eligible for PTO scholarships through the Lovejoy schools they attended (plus the Lovejoy Council and Preschool PTO).
All student applicants (a) must have attended LHS during their sophomore, junior, and senior years; (b) belong to the LHS Parent-Teacher-Student Organization; (c) complete the online scholarship application, including the essays; (d) upload a resume; and (e) have one letter of recommendation submitted.
To begin the application process, students must complete a brief survey, located online at 2020-21 Scholarship INTENT TO APPLY. This survey, which requests their name and email address, indicates their intent to apply.

Once the above Intent to Apply survey is received, we will send the student a link to the online scholarship application via email. This link will allow students exit and return to the application in case they cannot complete it in one sitting.

THE APPLICATION DEADLINE IS MIDNIGHT FRIDAY APRIL 23, 2021.

Please email Shannon Verschage at LJCouncilScholarship@gmail.com if you have any questions regarding this application.

Lovejoy Guard

Our Lovejoy Guard has been busy competing in local and virtual competitions since the end of January. We have had an incredible season so far with many successes for all of our teams from LHS and WSMS. We were lucky enough to compete in a national level competition against teams all across the country, and both our Varsity and JV teams were selected to move on to the Semi-Finals round last week. The Lovejoy HS JV team has advanced to finals in the Winter Guard International Championships! So we will be submitting one last performance video this week and see how our teams does in the final round.

This is the first year for our JV program to compete at a national level, and we are so proud of them for this accomplishment.
The Red Ledger

For the first time in Lovejoy history, The Red Ledger received a National Scholastic Press Association Pacemaker award. This is the most prestigious award from the largest national scholastic press association. This award looks at the online news site as a whole, reviewing everything from photos to social media. The Red Ledger was one of 13 online newspapers in the country, and one of three online newspapers in the state of Texas to receive this award. Congrats to the editors and staff members!
Lovejoy Robotics

For the first time in Lovejoy history, we had a robotics team achieve the 2nd highest award offered based on the engineering and design of their robot and overall excellence of their team. Team 1082X (pictured center) won the Design Award at the Texas VRC Championship this past Saturday and we are so proud of their efforts! They ended the day ranked 4th overall in skills and are now qualified for the World Championship.

Our brand new team 1082E (pictured right) also had an incredible run this season, and at state went nearly undefeated in qualifications. They ended the day ranked 5th overall and had the choosing ability to pick 1082X to go into the eliminations where they lost in the quarterfinals for their division.

1082C (pictured left) had their best season yet, fought hard all day and also lost in their divisions quarterfinals, but they had been ranked 15th in qualifications and did great throughout the day.

Our future looks bright as all 3 of these amazing teams will be returning next year! The success of our program would not have happened if it weren’t for the dedication and hard work of every student on every team. Special thanks to every virtual team member, and every team member on the teams, that could not attend State due to COVID restrictions. Everyone played a part in the success and we are Lovejoy Proud!
