A Message from the Principal
March 1, 2021

Parents and Guardians,

I hope you and your student had a chance to enjoy our warmer weather this weekend. After the arctic temperatures from a few weeks ago, I find myself appreciating how those frigid temperatures are few and far between in Texas!

Please note that SAT School Day for current LHS 11th graders has been postponed until Wednesday, March 24th. It was originally scheduled for this coming Wednesday, March 3rd. College Board has notified us that the winter storms created delays in shipping and they will not be able to deliver the tests in time. We will move the testing date to March 24th and it will take place on the same day as our PSAT test for current 9th graders. I will share more information as we finalize the schedule for March 24th.

One more reminder of how fast the school year is moving is that this week is the final week in the 3rd Quarter Grading Period. Please reach out to your student's teachers, counselors, or principal for any questions or concerns you may have with their progress.

Lastly, LHS will be closed Monday through Friday of next week (March 8th - 12th) for Spring Break. If you or your student needs any paperwork, like a VOE for a driver's license or a transcript sent to a university, please let us know as early as possible this week so we can make sure and take care of that for you. Please take a few minutes to review the information and events listed below.

Have a great week!

Boys Basketball
The Lovejoy Leopard basketball season finished their season this past Wednesday in the Area Championship as they fell to South Oak Cliff 44-46.

The Leopards had an incredible season going 21-4 overall and captured the outright District title going 13-1 while defeating Frisco Memorial in the Bi-District Championship.

In a year of many challenges, including playing and winning 8 district games in 12 days, the basketball team had a memorable season which made the Lovejoy Proud!

Congratulations to the players, coaches, and families!
Girls Soccer

Monday night the varsity girls soccer team beat Rock Hill 1-0. The winning goal was scored with less than three minutes to go by Taylor Person with a nice assist from Emma Smith.

JV tied Rock Hill 1-1 with a late goal scored by Hannah Daehnert and assisted by Kiera Watson.

Wednesday night the girls varsity soccer team beat a strong team in The Colony 2-0. An early first half goal was shot into the top corner by Callan Snider. The assist was credited to Paige Young after she brought down a throw in. A late second half goal scored off the post by Taylor Person sealed the game. Kate Carlson got the assist with a nice left footed cross.

Big shout out for the clean sheet tonight to keeper Nicole Young and defenders Emmy Wood, Sadie Dale, Jordan Watson, Cam Patrick, Callan Snider, Amiya Callicutt, and holding midfielders Emma Smith, Katie Welch, Natalia Duran De La Vega. It was also our 9th clean sheet of the season.

Friday night the girls varsity soccer team tied Wylie East 0-0 to earn a point. The team came up just short in a long penalty shootout 8-7. The girls battled hard all night long in what was a great performance by the team. This was the first time all season Wylie East have dropped points.

The JV team lost to Wylie East 2-1. Kailey McDonald scored a nice header after a cross from Natalie Burns. The girls tried to come up with the equalizer but fell just short.

Next game up is on Monday at 5:30/7:15 at Princeton Auxiliary Field.
Boys Soccer

Quite a week for the Lovejoy soccer program. Due to the cancellation of games the schedule the make up schedule has been tough to say the least. On Monday the Leopards started off @Proper Rock Hill with the JV boys starting the night off on the right foot with a 4-1 victory. Goals were scored by Nico Aguilar(2), Konnor Mayberry, and Sam Walton. The assists were credited to Will Drescher,(2), Will Greenwald, and Nico Aguilar. In the varsity game our boys did not disappoint also turning in a good performance with a 3- 0 victory. The goals were scored by Michael Myers, Cade Novicke, and Caden Carlock. The assists were credited to Caden Carlock and Cade Novicke.

Up next was a Wednesday night contest for the varsity boys only versus 1st place Colony. In a hard fought game the game ended 1-1 in regulation. The goal was scored by Michael Myers. As with all ties in our district, penalty kicks would determine the outcome. Unfortunately on this night the Colony came out ahead in penalty kicks (4-3).

On Friday Both teams traveled to Wylie East. The JV boys were back in action and suffered a loss at the hands of Wylie East 1-0. The varsity boys were determined to bounce back as Wylie East are elways a difficult opponent. Again in a very highly contested game the score remained 1-1 at the end of regulation. The goal was scored by Cade Novicke. This would be the second time in as many games that penalty kicks would determine the victor. On this night however, the Leopards come out on top (3-1).

Speech and Debate
UIL Congress - State Champions - Speech and Debate

Huge congratulations to Tajvir Singh and Chisom Okorafor in their performance at the UIL Congress State Championship. After being delayed due to the winter storm last week, Tajvir and Chisom competed in the final round earlier this week.

Tajvir gave four total speeches in the finals, two in each session. Chisom gave two speeches in the morning session and was the presiding officer in the afternoon.

Tajvir Singh placed 1st and Chisom placed 2nd in the State. These are the first medalists we have in this event in school history!

Chisom also received the Outstanding Presiding Officer award for 5a and did a great job presiding over the state finals afternoon session by running a hyper efficient chamber. This award is a recognition of her excellence in service to the other students in the chamber - her skill allowed for more speeches to be given in the allotted time and, therefore, the debate to go deeper than it would have otherwise. There was originally a processing issue, but UIL was quick to fix it and apologize.

We are Lovejoy Proud of you both!
National Speech & Debate Association's Academic All American Award

Congratulations to Taryn Sutherlin on earning the National Speech & Debate Association's All American award! This coveted award recognizes academic rigor, competitive speech & debate success and personal excellence. From more than 141,000 student members of the National Speech & Debate Association, fewer than 1% of students earn this award every year. Congratulations Taryn, we are so proud of you!
