Lovejoy High School News
A Message from the Principal
March 15, 2021

Parents and Guardians,

I hope you and your student were able to take some time off last week for Spring Break. I always look forward to this break and know that it comes at a good time for our students and staff.

However, with the end of Spring Break comes the reality that we are entering the last grading period of the school year. The next 11 weeks are really important for students. Please continue partnering with teachers, counselors, and principals as we want your child to finish strong in this last quarter.

As a reminder, this Wednesday, March 17th is the last LHS Professional Development day of the school year. All other campuses in the district will have a normal school day for students and staff, but it will be a student holiday for LHS students. Administrative staff will be answering phones but the building will be closed to the public.

As we shared prior to Spring Break, SAT School Day for current LHS 11th graders has been postponed until Wednesday, March 24th. This is also that day that our current 9th graders will take the PSAT test. On Tuesday, March 23rd, we will post classroom assignments in the Commons for 9th and 11th graders. Current 10th and 12th grade students will follow their normal school day schedule during testing on the 24th.

Below you will see a new "2021 LHS Senior Events" section with a link to dates and information about all senior events. This link will be helpful to parents and seniors and will be updated frequently with any new changes.

You can also find information below about all events going on at LHS. Please take a few minutes to review them.

Sincerely,

Notes from the Nurse
Parents,

Please note that any student or student with a family member waiting on results of a COVID test, due to being symptomatic, must remain at home.

If your student is not feeling well, please keep them at home and allow them to attend school virtually. This also includes not participating in any on-campus athletic practices or other events. Please see pages 25 and 26 in the LISD Planning Guide 2020-21

UIL requires that a student who has been diagnosed with COVID - 19 must receive a clearance from a physician prior to participation in athletics.

COVID Return to Athletics Form can be found HERE. For questions regarding this Athletic Form, please contact Susan Smiley, our Head Athletic Trainer at susan_smiley@lovejoyisd.net.

If your child is exposed to a positive lab confirmed COVID case or experiences symptoms, please email the school nurse at amy_dresser@lovejoyisd.net.

Symptomatic students should not be at school. If they become symptomatic at school, they must check in with the nurse before leaving campus.

AP Testing Dates
Monday, May 3rd - Friday, May 14th

This year Lovejoy High School will be administering Advanced Placement exams between May 3rd and May 14th. Exams will be the traditional paper and pencil exams and will follow the exam schedule that can be found HERE. All students will be required to take their AP exams in this testing window.

Although CollegeBoard had provided schools with some flexibility to the format (digital exams are available), Lovejoy High School opted not to use those options. They are only offered on certain dates and this would have resulted in a conflicts for students. The windows for these exams were either the same dates as LHS Final Exams for 9th-12th graders, or a window that occurred after the academic school year had ended.

Challenges in the digital platform our students experienced last year also played a factor in this decision. Additionally, we considered the inability to revise answers in the current digital exams as a reason to utilize the paper and pencil platform.

If you have questions about Advanced Placement Exams please contact Mary Cabrera at Mary_Cabrera@lovejoyisd.net or Bruce Coachman at bruce_coachman@lovejoyisd.net.

Since January, the students have had class approximately 14 times with the many holidays and unexpected snow week. We are very pleased to share this orchestra earned Sweepstakes for their Concert and in the Sight-Reading Room. Mrs. Vanhook and Mrs. Winkler are very proud of their students and appreciative of their families as they prepared music and excelled despite the many obstacles of the recents weeks and challenges of the school year. The students rose to the occasion and showcased their abilities this week. The performances were absolutely outstanding.

Computer Science Team

Over the weekend Lovejoy competed in Hewlett Packard’s “Code Wars” computer programming competition. This year’s event was a virtual competition where they distributed a packet of problems to all of the teams and student had three hours to complete as many problems as possible. The harder the problem, the more points the problem is worth. This year Lovejoy entered three teams and our top Advanced Team took third place at the Houston site/contest. The team consisted of Mark Wen, Kevin Xu and Nathan Fowler. There were over 300 teams entered in the competition in Houston alone. The event was held simultaneously in multiple cities across the country. The top Novice team came in 24th place out of approximately 200 teams. The novice team consisted of Hannah Mao, Samatha Belaturand and Cameron Coleman.
