Lovejoy High School News
A Message from the Principal
March 22, 2021

Parents and Guardians,

This Wednesday, March 24th our 9th graders will take the PSAT, and our 11th graders will be taking the SAT. All testing will take place on-campus at LHS and students should arrive no later than 8:45. Students who are testing should also bring a pencil and their own calculator. Classes for 10th and 12th graders will be displaced for testing but students should report to campus at their regular time if they are an on-campus learner.
Also, Lovejoy ISD has learned from the Texas Education Agency that districts will be eligible for "Hold Harmless" state aid funding in the 4th - 6th six weeks of school based on on-campus attendance participation rates during the last 6-weeks of school. We need your help to get our full funding. If your child is signed up for on-campus instruction learning during Q4, please make sure they are present every day on campus unless they are officially quarantined or are absent for other valid reasons such as illness, doctor's appointments, etc.
Please take a few minutes to review the information below including our recognition portions that celebrate some of our students and programs.

AP Testing Dates
Monday, May 3rd - Friday, May 14th

This year Lovejoy High School will be administering Advanced Placement exams between May 3rd and May 14th. Exams will be the traditional paper and pencil exams and will follow the exam schedule that can be found HERE. All students will be required to take their AP exams in this testing window.
Although CollegeBoard had provided schools with some flexibility to the format (digital exams are available), Lovejoy High School opted not to use those options. They are only offered on certain dates and this would have resulted in a conflicts for students. The windows for these exams were either the same dates as LHS Final Exams for 9th-12th graders, or a window that occurred after the academic school year had ended.
Challenges in the digital platform our students experienced last year also played a factor in this decision. Additionally, we considered the inability to revise answers in the current digital exams as a reason to utilize the paper and pencil platform.
If you have questions about Advanced Placement Exams please contact Mary Cabrera at or Bruce Coachman at

Freshman Kailey Littlefield breaks her second school record of the season! Kailey ran 57.9 to win the 400M Meter Dash and broke the all-time school record in the 800-meter, clocking in at 2:13.42. Congratulations, Kailey on Record-Breaking Performance!!

Lovejoy Wrestling

The Lovejoy men and women’s wrestling teams have been busy competing these past two weeks and both the men’s and women’s teams have been putting up some dominating wins!
On Wednesday March 10th, the men kept their undefeated streak in district duals alive with three more dominant wins, defeating Gunter and Whitesboro by a perfect match score of 84-0 each and crushing host Wylie East 63-12. The complete team effort from our men included an overall record of winning 39 out of the total 42 matches in the varsity duals.

Of special note, senior Jakob Underwood won his 100th career match, becoming only the second Leopard male wrestler to eclipse the century mark in his career. Jakob did so in style, producing another win by fall!

On the women’s side, Lovejoy senior Charis Vela and junior Avery Ashley wrestled against Whitesboro and Gunter, both finishing the day undefeated! Charis and Avery both finished 2-0 for the day, each winning both of their matches by pin!

Girls Soccer
Friday night the girls varsity soccer team beat Rock Hill 2-0. The first goal was scored by Avery Templin after a cross by Maya Hignite. The second goal was scored from a free kick by senior, Natalie Reyna, just before halftime.

Defenders Natalie Reyna, Maggie Manders, Amiya Callicutt, Lexie Schuttee, Katie Irby, Jordan Watson, and goalkeeper Nicole Young - who also saved a penalty - kept our 13 clean sheet of the season! Shout out to Natalia Duran De La Vega and Kate Carlson for holding things down in the midfield in front of our back four as well.

The win was the team's 15th of the season, a regular season record for the program. The first round of playoffs are up next!

The junior varsity team fell to Rock Hill 2-1 in their last game of the season. The lone goal was scored by Kiera Watson and assisted by Kailey McDonald. There was lots of growth from this group over the season and improvements on the past two seasons. Great season of results and development for the junior varsity.

See below for playoff schedule. Ticketing information will be available soon.

Lovejoy Speech and Debate

Tajvir Singh and Jonathan Zanzuri competed in the UIL State Championship for Cross Examination Debate over the weekend. After a strong finish in the preliminary rounds, they advanced to the octofinal round. In octos, Tajvir and Jonathan beat Barbers Hill on a 3-0 decision - advancing to quarterfinals. In quarters they had a really close debate with Dripping Springs, but were eliminated on a 2-1 decision. Ultimately, this puts the boys as one of the top 8 teams in the state of Texas!
The Red Ledger

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association named The Red Ledger a Gold Crown Award winner in digital news. This is the highest national honor an online paper can receive from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Only 9 schools across the country received this honor, and The Red Ledger was one of two schools in the state of Texas. We are so proud of all the staff members for their hard work!

The National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) named The Red Ledger as a Pacemaker Finalist. The Pacemaker award is the most prestigious award for national students publication for NSPA. It has been three years since the staff has been a Pacemaker Finalists, and their dedication has finally paid off. Only 43 school across the country, and six in the state of Texas were selected as finalists. A huge congrats to all the staff members, and the community members who supported the staff along the way. Full results will be released on April 10.

Congratulations to the 2020 “Leopard” yearbook staff for receiving a silver crown from Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Yearbook contests are a year behind when the book is distributed, so these kids are just now finding out how they did competing against other schools for this national award. This is the second CSPA crown for "The Leopard" in the program's history. I am incredibly proud of them in a normal year, but this one holds a special place because they finaled this book when we were in shutdown, and created a supplement when we were all in our separate corners, working on our collaborative project through Zoom. So this one is all the more special!

Lovejoy Visual Arts

Through everything that has come our way, 2021 has been an incredible year for LJVA. Our students have continued to pour their work ethic, innovative processes, and thoughtful ideation into their work, and it has been noticed nationwide! We are extremely proud of the latest recognition of our students’ efforts through one of our country's longest running visual arts competitions; Scholastic Art and Writing. Of the 27 regional awards (our region includes 7 states), 14 pieces/portfolios received a “Gold Key” and moved on to the national competition.
Out of these 14 award winning works/portfolios our LJVA artists set another incredible standard with 4 artists winning NATIONAL GOLD KEY MEDALS!
Grace Flinchbaugh (Sr), Molly Gornell (Sr), Madi Stutler (Jr), and Karlee Williams (Jr - 2 time Gold Key Winner) all received a National Gold Key; the highest award possible in this nationwide competition. Historically, these 4 national award-winning artists would be invited to Carnegie Hall for the National Award Ceremony, but will be celebrated via a digital award ceremony this year. Please join us in congratulating all of our National Award Winners in this incredible honor! We could not be more proud of all of our students’ vision, work ethic, and personal voice within their artwork.
