Supporting The Arts & Arts Councils Everywhere

Volume 6 No. 7 | February 16, 2024

Notes from the Editor:

What a month February is for arts audiences! The calendar makers tried hard to stretch it to five weekends but even with an additional day for leap year, four was the best they could do, and then stuffed them all to the brim. Wisely, some arts organizations recognize the other days of the week. For example, Live! from Vero Beach grabbed Thursdays and scheduled concerts for every one through season! And Indian River Symphonic Association has a Tuesday concert on the schedule this week.

If you run into one of those SOLD OUT signs that keep popping up (yay!), don't let that discourage you. Christ by the Sea added a second performance for Seven Monster Pianos and Vero Beach Museum of Art opened the International Lecture Series presentation this week to streaming and a simulcast in the Leonhardt Auditorium.

This Arts Blast offers news of plenty of things to do but there are far more that we can't fit in. Make the Arts Blast calendar at willimiller.com a frequent stop.

Seven - Count 'em - Seven Pianos

on Stage for a Monster of a Concert!

NOTE: The 3 p.m. performance is sold out but tickets are available for the added concert at 7 p.m. 772-231-1661

It started with only five pianos three years ago. Marcos Flores, Christ by the Sea United Methodist Church's director of worship arts, wondered how it would be to bring together some of the area's best piano talent on one stage at the same time. It turned out to be a brilliant idea!

Despite their packed schedules leading up to the performance, each of the pianists in Sunday's concerts took time to talk about the event for Arts Blast.

Marcos D. Flores

Our first 5 monster piano concert was on 2017 with the original 5: Kelley Coppage, Jacob Craig, Marcos Flores, Joanne Knott, and Rochelle Sallee. It was such a success that we planned a sequel, and with the idea of adding a piano each time we would do it again.

So our sequel was a 6 monster piano concert adding my piano teacher Caio Pagano on 2018. Once again it was a total success, but due to covid and other challenges, it was not until now, Feb 18 2024 that we planned the next one.

This time is a 7 monster piano concert and to join the original 5, we invited two former piano students of mine who were recipients of the Vero Beach Opera Piano Scholarship that I’m honored to teach. They are Becca Harrison and Andrew Miller, and they are both currently piano majors at FSU. This addition is very meaningful since this time around we are adding a new generation of pianists to this popular concert. Also, we are proud of the fact that all our pianists are from our local area of Vero Beach and Sebastian, a showcase of high caliber piano level, great collaboration, fellowship, and love for the fine arts! More importantly, we are all very humbled for the incredible support of our faithful audience who inspire us to continue preparing more of these uplifting and memorable concerts!

Rochelle Sallee - Sebastian Resident, pianist/performer/arranger

The most challenging part of this concert is actually behind me! I volunteered to arrange the Concerto Medley for 7 pianos, and worked on it for 3 months during the summer. To highlight the most loved and popular themes from the great list of possibilities was a wonderful trip through 200 years of music. For those who don't already know, a concerto features a Soloist (in this case, pianist) and Orcherstra, with interlocking musical play, as well as the cadenza's which are long solo passages usually featuring brilliant technical work for the solo player. Already a standard concert feature in the classical era (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven) the concerto reached it's pinnacle during the great romantic era. The themes and orchestral interplay sections have been popularized in movies and television, quoted and made into songs, andused by figure skaters Just listening to the repertoire was a great treat for me personally! Using my own sentiments along with suggestions from the other 6 pianists and lists of "most recognized" themes, I selected 6 concerti, and started whittling down the music, building a structured flow from piece to piece, and allowing for a featured solo by all of our players. The Rachmoninov 2nd concerto is so loved, each movement is represented.

During the arranging process I tried to mimic the orchestra in some creative ways, by dividing the remaining 6 pianos as support reflecting the nuances of the original scoring. During the concert you will hear the strings, woodwinds and horns reflected in the various players and choices of 1, 2 and up to all 6 pianos. This is absolute fun for us to perform, whether we are featured soloist or faux orchestra! I don't want to give a spoiler alert, so I will say Rachmoninov, Brahms, Grieg, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saens will come to life to delight you with snips and themes throughout! All 7 pianists will have spotlight breathtaking moments, and the audience will be tempted to hum along to some of the world's favorite themes!

Kelley Coppage

I think the best part of the concert is experiencing the talents of the other artists and learning each others interpretations of pieces.

This can also be daunting. I can have an interpretations all worked out in my ear and then hear it another way from a different artist. Sometimes it means a few more hours at the piano to get the right interpretation.

Of course most daunting is finding a schedule for rehearsing that works for us to rehearse together.

Jacob Craig

What is the most fun about this concert?

The music itself coupled with collaboration with good people and friends.

What is the most daunting about this concert?

The piano is an individualist instrument that is very difficult to line up with even duets much less 7 pianos.

How do you rehearse a seven-piano performance without all the musicians together?

All musicians are responsible for learning their individual parts at a prescribed tempo, and then rehearsals together are for ensemble and interpretive purposes.

What should Arts Blast readers watch for?

The unusual sound 7 pianos at once will make, and the unique way it makes the arrangements sound.

Will you do it again next year if asked?

Always and forever.

Joanne Knott

The thing I enjoy the most about a concert like this is the honor of playing with so many accomplished professional musicians. It is such a gift from God to be able to do this and we have so many good laughs together and really enjoy each other’s company and all the different aspects of our different talents.

The most daunting aspect for me is finding the time to dedicate to practice, the demands of family with two children at home, a part time job working at school, teaching, and also all the other accompanying gigs during this season it is hard to fit it all in!

Our rehearsals all together are short but efficient. With everyone’s demanding schedule we are only able to get a little time together but that is the most fun way of practicing for me!

Watch out for entertaining moments in the concert and loads of talent from our young musician performers!

Andrew Miller

  1. I think the most fun thing for me about this concert is being able to come back to Vero Beach and play a concert with so many of the people who helped to inspire my love of music and educate me at the keyboard. When I was in High School, I had turned pages for the monster piano concert many times, since I was a student of Dr. Flores, but to now be in the position where I am a performer, it's truly a special feeling and I can't wait to perform with everyone.
  2. The most daunting thing about the concert is probably also the most fun. Coming back to play with my music mentors, while an amazing experience, is also a little daunting. They will get to see how much I've grown as a musician in my years of college, and I'll have to ensure that I'm able to pull my own weight before the day of the concert.
  3. A lot of times when it comes to musical performances, there aren't going to be a lot of rehearsals with everybody together, due to time difficulties. That's why it's very important to know your own part inside and out, as well as to listen to recordings as often as you can. This way you can understand how your part fits with everybody else's, despite not being able to meet in person. This way, when we do finally meet for a rehearsal, we already have ideas of how everything should sound.
  4. The audience should look for everything! With the musical selection we have for this concert, there is never a dull moment. A lot of hard work and dedication went into the learning of this music, and I'm positive it'll be a spectacular concert. We have pieces throughout the program where each artist gets their own highlight, so definitely watch out for these showcases.
  5. I would love to perform again next year if asked!

Becca Harrison

What is the most fun about this concert?

This will be my first time ever playing with more than two pianos--that it's actually seven will be very cool!

What is the most daunting about this concert?

Honestly, the same thing that makes it especially fun. Also, I'd say I'm sensitive to sound, so this will be interesting!

How do you rehearse a seven-piano performance without all the musicians together?

The four hands music can be rehearsed together, luckily! While at school, I'm practicing my parts and looking forward to all rehearsing together once back in Vero.

What should Arts Blast readers watch for?

A lot of the music is exciting and fast-paced, the whole time you can catch when different parts are passed to different people, despite us all playing on the same kind of instrument.

Will you do it again next year if asked?

If I'm able to be in town, gladly!

Kinky Boots, the musical that opens at Riverside Theatre February 20 tells the story of a successful shoe company in England that ran into hard times after almost a century in business. As "fashions were changing and inexpensively-made shoes from overseas were flooding the market," it took the innovative thinking of fifth-generation shoemaker Steve Pateman and Sue Sheppard to turn around the fortunes of W J Brookes.

Sue (born Anthony) owned a store that specialized in clothing for transgendered individuals and drag queens and needed a line of women’s shoes and boots that could support the weight of a man. The shoe line they came up with, called Divine, was an immediate success accounting for 50 percent of W J Brookes’ sales in their first year.

The story, told in a documentary on BBC2 in 1999, inspired Kinky Boots, a film written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth in 2005. A musical adaptation of the film opened on Broadway in April 2013 with original music written by Grammy Award-winning artist Cyndi Lauper and a book written by Tony Award-winning actor Harvey Fierstein. Kinky Boots won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score for Lauper. A production opened in London’s West End in 2015 and earned the Olivier Award for Best Musical. The Broadway production closed in April 2019 after over 2,500 performances.

The show focuses on Charlie Price and the changes his life takes when his father unexpectedly dies leaving him with the shoe factory, which is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. While contemplating his family legacy and his duty to their long-time employees, Charlie comes in contact with Lola, a drag queen star, who is looking for durable footwear for her and her fellow drag performers.

Radically changing the factory’s product line surprises the workers and brings up strong hostility by others. Though challenges are exposed, in the end, the seeds of acceptance and empathy are sown. When the debut of the new shoe line is put in jeopardy at an important footwear show in Milan, Lola and her angels arrive to save the day.

Kinky Boots is on the Stark Stage at Riverside Theatre February 20 – March 17. Tickets start at $45. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Box Office at 772-231-6990 or online at www.riversidetheatre.com.

Performances are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 7:30pm; Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm; with matinees on Wednesdays, select Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 2pm

Riverside Theatre’s production of Kinky Boots is Directed and Choreographed by DJ Salisbury and stars Josh Canfield as Charlie, Darius A. Harper as Lola, Emily Bacino Althaus as Lauren, Arianne Davidow as Nicola, Dane Agostinis as Don, and John Anker Bow as George.

A.C.T. Studio Theatre

presents

The Pillowman

By Martin McDonagh

February 23 – March 10

This black comedy is widely regarded as one of the greatest plays of the past 25 years.  It examines the role of the artist in society and asks what price we pay for freedom of expression. With echoes of Stoppard, Kafka, and the Brothers Grimm, the play centers on a writer in an unnamed totalitarian state who is being interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a series of child murders. The result is an urgent work of theatrical bravura and an unflinching examination of the very nature and purpose of art.

WARNING: THIS SHOW CONTAINS ADULT LANGUAGE AND ADULT THEMES.
